Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could This Generation Be as long/Longer Than The Last One?

It's not the length... it's how you use it... and I'm talking about time here not penis size.

I believe it will last as long as the last generation.Games are taking much longer to make, and as such, a normal console cycle(4-5 years), is not sustenable anymore. Not to meantion pS4 enormous success, which can hold this gen a little longer.Next gen will only come, at earliest, at end 2020(nintendo being a possible exception), in my opinion.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

I give it 7 years, 5 for Nintendo.

I'm now filled with determination.

Maybe if we give our consoles Viagra they will last longer

people keep having misconceptions of the length of last gen making it sound like it was super long it was 8 yrs for the 360 and 7 yrs for ps3 and wii (was 5-6 yrs for previous gen) much like this gen it took awhile for the ps3 and 360 to establish good SW libraries which i believe didnt happen till late 08 so the golden years were 2008-2012

last gen lasted long b/c the gen introduced us to the new era of gaming with social online gaming and the introduction of HD gaming with are brand new lcd tvs that were also a boom many converting during 05-2010 i myself got high speed internet in 09 prior owning dial up and bought my first HD lcd tv in 2010

online gaming was big during last gen it prolong the game much more than anything else we saw before achievements, replays with higher difficulties or unlocks ect. it also started all these youtube guys doing there commentaries and competitive gaming becoming a sport as time went by these things became a fad sure online gaming is still fun but its not as big as it was before many if not all youtube channels are dead or dying

also a point i dont see being tossed around is that MS was riding high compered to sony, sony had no real reason to release the ps4 any earlier as they were trying to recover and profit aswell as overcome the 360 in WW sales and MS was in no rush either with there successful release of the 360 slim and short term kinect release

the point is last gen lasted long b/c of this and so far with this gen theres nothing really new or innovated being displayed and sony is winning by as substantial amount which will cause ms to counter with a next gen release earlier than expected which will then cause sony to do the same. which leads me to believe that it will be shorter by how much idk right now i would say 1-2 yrs so not factoring the nintendo we are looking at new consoles releasing in 2019 imo

At least as long, with the exception of Nintendo. I could see them releasing a system about as powerful as the others after a healthy five years, then everyone sitting back for another three or four. The last one was long for a reason, and things are only getting tougher as far as development goes. I think we're in for a loooong one.

I see no reason why it will last more than 6 years. I'm honestly expecting 5 years to be honest.

I think it will last 6 years max

How is it possible for, lets say Microsoft, to come out with a new console by 2019 when it took them 8 years to come out with the XB1? We all know that Microsoft had to rush the XB1 to the gaming market because of Sony with the PS4.

You also have to consider that these companies had no intentions of cutting this generation short at the very start, so I highly doubt they have much in the works for their new console. There is no way that they would dump millions of dollars into R&D to then just scrap it and start over so soon. People saying that this generation will only last 5-6 years is just ludicrous.

What's ludicrous is you thinking it took MS 8 years to develop the X1 and that somehow

means their next console will take just as longer or longer.

Well I based this off of the release of the XB360 (2005) and the release of the XB1 (2013).  Could you kindly share the exact year at which Microsoft started developing the XB1?  No?  Didn't think so.  So please forgive me for not knowing exactly just how long it took them to develop the XB1 when you yourself don't know.  I was using the XB360 timeframe to gauge just how long it would take for them to release their new console.

My point still stands that they were riding the success of the XB360 and didn't start thinking about creating their next console until well into the XB360's console lifecycle. The current success of the XB1 is doing better than the XB360 as is the PS4 over the PS3.  Since PS4 and XB1 are both doing better than their predecessors, why would anyone think that a new generation would come any sooner?  Just because Nintendo is currently unsuccessful doesn't mean everybody else has to follow suit.
