@NJ5: Yakuza wasn't really spot on. When you compare 156k and 178k it seems alright but it was already known that Yakuza sold 113k on its first day. So in fact Source estimated only Friday-Sunday sales and gave them 43k when in fact it was 65k.

There are actually lots of titles that are terrible estimated in preview (WiiFit, Gundam Musou Special, Monster Hunter Portable 2, Doraemon, Soma Bringer, Harvest Moon plus some titles that can't be compared becouse they aren't in Famitsu top at all). If I made as bad predictions in Prediction League as are in the Japanese Preview I would be losing tons of money.

The upper bound for Yakuza 3 was 172k in the preliminary data, that's why I said it was "almost spot on, slightly undertracked". Considering that the preliminary numbers are based on one retailer only, I think they're quite accurate in many cases.

Does anyone know which position Yakuza 3 was at in that "most anticipated" list?

Not in the top 15 for February 22-28. The titles on the list can be expected to do better, unless there are really awful reviews.

PS3 vs 360 sales

@ johnsobas

oh jesus christ, you're kidding right? I thought people stopped using this list when game after game failed to spark barely any interest. 360 games could be found on here too, but they didn't amount to anything either

Remember Blue Dragon? This game was ranked highly on their list just before release, probably by far the best sold 360 game for Japan. It sold pretty well considering the PS3 has over 6 times the install base in Japan.

@NJ5: Well, when you make a big enough range than you always will be right. He also based this range on 156k when in fact he predicted only 43k. But I don't think it's the point: first number is the estimate, second and third are just first number +/-10%.
If you think that Japanese Previews are accurate than that's your opinion. My opinion on the other hand is that if Source' simply guessed numbers (with first day and last week numbers' help) they would be more accurate.

Great sales for Yakuza 3.

PSP is doing very well.

I don't think the ps3 sales are that big of a deal. Look at how the psp was doing, and now it has been doing great.

The ps3 will pick up steam after a lot of things happen--
An affordable price--needs at least one more, maybe two more price drops
RPG's...the ps2 sold because of its rpg's, the ps3 doesn't have ANY. (And I think this is 75% of the problem personally)
Budget games...a few titles are starting to come out in a week or two, but it will take more than 3 or 4 budget titles.
And a ton more "little" factors that will ALL add up.

Eitherway, I see the ps3 as a lot like the psp, which isn't doing that badly in Japan anymore.  Give it time and it will be fine.  That's why I'll refrain from knocking it for now.  I don't want to be one of those that looks like a jack ass in a couple years when it does start selling really well.

Looked it up, seems I was correct. The game sold over twice as many copies as the second best selling 360 game in Japan. On the PS3 the game would probably have been a million seller for Japan alone.

I dont know what people where expecting . IMO Yakuza 3 sales are great ... if it wil have the legs of the first two games , than it will be even better :)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Good to see that Brawl is doing very well, unlike most of the major wii games (besides the Wii series of course :P ).

Generally weak hardware allround, the Wii has dropped significantly as well the last 2-3 weeks. 360 is dead still and crying for a chopper to pick it up from the water and the PS3 is flexing and bellowing with all its might to no avail...
Very low ww hardware this week, possibly the lowest yet this year!
All these so called system sellers on all platforms seem to have very little effect, or at least a lot less than we believed they would.

Very dissapointing numbers for the PS3, I was really hoping for more of a bump.....sigh.....oh well, here's to hoping the next game has more of an effect. Better numbers for Yakuza 3 than I was figuring.
