Forums - Gaming - Ex-Naughty Dog Dev Explains Why PS4/XB1 Will Never Achieve CGI Visuals, 4K Will Take Two Generations

There has been much talk about achieving CG like graphical fidelity in video games. There has always been this pipe dream that in game visuals can look as good as pre-rendered graphics. Regardless of the improvements in hardware, this dream is still a dream. Although in game visuals have improved and have come a long way in the last decade, CG quality visuals is still a challenge for developers.

But this generation is different. The PS4 and Xbox One are quite capable machines. So will we see these consoles getting closer to mimicking high quality CGI seen in movies but in real-time? We raised the same question to Filmic Worlds founder and former Naughty Dog developer, John Hable.

“Honestly, it is hard to say.  I think it will be a very long time.  The current crop of consoles is much better than the previous generation, but the trailers are getting better too,” Hable said to GamingBolt. “If you really want to hit that level of quality then you need staggering triangle counts with really long shaders. Photoreal global illumination is very easy offline but very difficult in realtime.”

So how long will it take before consoles hit such a high level of graphical fidelity?  According to Hable it will take another two console cycles before CG level visuals at 4K could be made possible. “I don’t have a good answer for you, but my guess would be longer than you think.  One more console generation seems too quick.  Maybe in two more generations?  That would be PS6 and the 5th gen Xbox?  And if we need to render in 4k then add another generation which puts us at PS7 and 6th gen Xbox.  It’ll be a while.”

Hable further stated that budgeting is also an issue as movies have millions of dollars that a game developer or publisher could not simply afford. “Of course, they will never fully line up because of the content costs. Trailers and feature-length movies simply have a much higher budget per second than what the full game can afford.  This difference is more than an order of magnitude in some cases.”

Does anyone else see console gaming imploding simply due to the immense cost of keeping up with advancing technology? Hell companies like Konami have pretty much abandoned consoles for mobile because the games don't have to cost 50 million to make and we are seein developers leaving AAA studios more often now. Maybe HD did kill gaming....

No... it was pretty much the same when the change from 2D to 3D occured and pretty much in every generation that managed to achieve a large graphical leap. The gaming scene is changing but none of its main branches is imploding for a good while.

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

What is CG like graphical fidelity? Is it CG from films? Who on earth really thinks that PS4 and Xbone can achieve gameplay graphics like a CG film?...

...wait, do they mean a CG films from the 90s?

Hmm, pie.

I can understand the massive jump from 2D to 3D(ie sprites to polgons, SNES to N64, MegaDrive to Saturn etc) and also from standard definition to high definition(PS2 to PS3, Xbox OG to 360) but from 7th genetation to 8th there was no real colossal advancement like those.

I agree with his stance on 4K, especially 4K at 60fps.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

So why should console implode but not PC? Consoles will be fine because the console owners can finance exclusives like bloodborne or Uncharted 4.

No one was saying the PS4 and X1. People in general want video games to look like a CG pre-rendered character. That can do all that in realtime. Basically, everyone wants Avengers Hulk to be their main characters detail quality. And enviroments. Which is a lot to ask for. Since Hulk is made as a real human. Internal bone/muscle system. Acurate cloth physics. Skin deformation, the works. A game character doesn't do this. You can't flex a muscle under the skin, the skin won't stretch, veins won't pop out. The mesh just bends. And doesn't care if a bicep clips into the arm. Think of the characters with coats in Deus EX. The colars all magically bend and follow the neck. As they move around in cutscenes. That isn't life like.

Last time I checked, The Order 1886 has seamless cgi/gameplay.

so i don't know wtf that guy is talking about. if i could smell the internet, what he said would smell like BS.

Believe it.

I don't think 4k is important personally, especially considering that for the moment most people TV's are no bigger then 50", let alone 4k.

In terms of CG graphics I feel confident we will see it next gen. Epic teased it in their real time 30fps, 1080p tech demo running on the Titan X. It will be available to all UE4 devs by next month so I don't think theres much marketing trickery going on here, they also have a video on twitch of them moving through the enviornments and dynamically changing the lighting
