Forums - Gaming - Do You Want Virtual Reality/Augmented or Not? Fad or Not?

I agree. I can see it working really well for racing games, along with some other limited uses that I haven't thought about yet. I don't see it working too well for the large majority of genres though.

That's the thing, for some types of games, a VR headset can be complimentary, like with first person games where you get to control the direction at which your character's head is looking (along with left stick for direction you move, and right stick for where you aim with your weapon. Which mean you could point your gun in a direction, while looking at another.). But VR in itself will bring with it entirely new genres. Having a VR headset is only the enfancy period of the experience. True virtual reality will have you interact with your whole body in a virtual world via motion trackers/sensors. In itself, it cannot be applied to most genres already existing. And it's still quite a long way off before we get to experience a mature version of this concept.

Virtual Reality has really has made a name for itself in the last year or two with the introduction of Oculus Rift.  Later on Sony revealed their own prooduct Project Morpheus which will be released for the PS4 at some point with an unknown price and date at this time.  We will most likely hear more about this at Sony's E3 Briefing.

With that said are you interested in Virtual Reality devices?  Are you ok with Sony spending time at E3 talking about Project Morpheus if they do?

On the opposite side of things Microsoft is set to reveal their Augmented Reality Headset Hololense  this E3 so headset, or glasses wear will be everywhere this E3. Hololense will cost more than an Xbox and is reported to be a stand alone device. Can they make a a place in gaming or are they just a fad?

For me, Augmented reality is fine as it doesn't take you away from reality, it just adds to it. It can add or alter your surroundings, but you are still fully aware of them and in many cases interact with them, plus it can be more than just a solo experience.

Virtual reality is bunk, at least they way it is for now. Need a helmet, gives an entirely new 'reality' that you are supposed to interact with and all that, but you are standing in the middle of a room without any situational awareness or any real interaction. It seems to only be a solo experience. Your house could be on fire and you wouldn't have a clue till you can't breathe because of the smoke or heat.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

As a fan of stereoscopic 3D I'm very interested in trying it, although I'm aware that first gen consumer VR sets will likely have quite a few setbacks like a noticeable screendoor effect.

I am positive that virtual reality will not be a fad and it has been proven, through the Oculus Rift, that it has received widespread appeal. I have been looking for a new gaming experience and I am sure virtual reality is exactly what I am looking for. So I would love to hear a lot of information regarding Project Morpheus and what it has to offer to the gaming industry.

i think VR will be a reasonably successful fad, much like kinect. it will sell a few tens of millions of devices. most games will be developed for not VR but many will be "better with VR". only a handful of games will be "VR exclusive". for those that enjoy the technology it will be a very deep, engaging experience but the mass market will not fully embrace it because it is too dorky. eventually people will lose interest and the technology will fall out of use when the next amazing whatever comes along.

in the short term AR isn't ready, it will be glitchy and unreliable. in the long term AR will be terrible for the deep kind of gaming people on this forum enjoy, we want to be put into an engrossing world not play in our own boring worlds. however, AR will be fantastic in revolutionizing the "smartphone" and drastically change the way people interact with their information: phone calls, texts, navigation. there will be a bunch of shitty "AR mobile" games on these devices of course but people on this site will never respect them. it will make much more money though from an investment perspective.

It depends really. If we get a VR device like the ones they use in Sword Art Online then it could be extreamly exciting and could be the next big thing. But in the flip side that anime has shown the world the dangers of VR games and playing games like them. As far as AR goes, I'm not crazy about it. It does give you that oh wow factor one time but afterward it gets stale. Personally I hope we get the same technology as in Sword Art Online since it gives gamers the full emersion technology that gamers have been wanting for years now. We are certainly on that path to get this technology soon and I'm pretty excited for it!

It is definitely a gimmick until has some meaningful games and uses attached to it.
In saying this there is no doubt the first few years will be bumpy, but will also decide its fate.

Yes and Yes.

"Hololense will cost more than an Xbox and is reported to be a stand alone device. Can they make a a place in gaming or are they just a fad?"

Dont see Hololense makeing a breakthrough via gameing, so no.
That doesnt mean its a fad, just not suited for gameing.

I'm not sold on it yet, VR headsets in their current form are just holding the screen close up to ur face. I won't really be sold on VR until it's something like Sword Art Online, where ur going into an actual virtual world, I'm not sure if something like that is even possible tho.
