Yes and Yes.
"Hololense will cost more than an Xbox and is reported to be a stand alone device. Can they make a a place in gaming or are they just a fad?"
Dont see Hololense makeing a breakthrough via gameing, so no.
That doesnt mean its a fad, just not suited for gameing.
