Forums - Politics Discussion - Why Are You An Atheist?

I have never, ever even once in my life come close to experiencing anything even partly resembling a shread of proof that there is any god, and I don't see our world as a place that any benign being would have created had it known how it would turn out.
There is simply no reason for me to believe but there are several compelling reasons to not believe.
I come from a very secular country and live in one of the only ones that is even more secular; I personally like that idea and I can't say that our societies are more decripit and immoral than others; in fact, we are ranked at the very top in the world on almost all metrics for happiness, despite the absense of religion for the majority of the population.

Scandinavia, fuck yeah!

Why wouldn't I be? We all are really. Do anyone believe in every single god there is? Of course not, that's impossible, so in a way everyone is an atheist.

There is no evidence that supports the existence of an all knowing being, and that's why it's called faith and belief. Science is the best thing that ever happened human kind, so why would we need a god when we have science?

And you can be spiritual without being religious. Religion don't have monopoly on spirituality or morality. There is nothing in religion we need any more.

I've heard this a couple of times in this topic and I don't think I quite get it.  What exactly is the difference between being spiritual and being religious?  I feel like a lot of people just use spiritual in place of introspective, but it seems like spiritual has a distinctly super natural tinge to it, which I would consider religious.

This thread was meant to be exclusively about atheists expressing their beliefs.

That makes no sense, sorry. Atheists don't have a belief, that's the whole point.

Sorry about that :P. I'm trying to leave out making atheism seem like a choice and that is the best I could come up with. Feel free though to change that as you please, what I was trying to say was that Atheists in this thread should not be quoted so as to contradict what they're saying ( I hope that, that sounds better ). Ounce again a lot of comments have indeed been very though t inducing, so thank you. I will obviously need more time to reflect on everything people here are saying, though.

I always think that you worship something in a religion, while you dont when youre spiritual. Being spiritual doesnt mean you take moral advice from a supernatural beings holy books from 1000 years ago. I think that spirituality and philosophy some times are very closely related nowadays.

I noticed atheists get quite annoyed and immediately correct people who unintentionally say it's a "belief". Probably he meant to say "perception" or "point of view".

Spiritual meaning that while you may not believe in a deity or follow any religion, you still have a Priest bless your Boat as either a superstition or a cultural meme. Or perhaps you offer a prayer at a grave as a sign of respect.

#1 Amb-ass-ador

You talk about it like its a choice. There is no choice. Do you believe in the tooth fairy? Why not? How is it any different from any religion? I will believe in something i know to be true with proof or high probability. If you think i am an atheist because i want to, that is wrong. I wish for there to be a benevolant God. But that wish is born out of the cruelty of life, not plausibility.
There is no evidance and no plausible reason for a benevolant God to exist. Give me proof and i will believe. And by proof i dont mean a fairy tale from thousands of years ago or highly interpretable statements. The probability that that is unaltered is 0%,even if it was believable.

Show me the existance of a sentient higher beeing and i will believe. Ask me to believe without that proof and i ask you why? Some excuse of a test? Nope. Why would he do that? What need does he have? Why would he care to control every human beeing when there are billions of them? Humanity is full of charlotons and clever people. These religions are just the side product of these minds trying to control the populace in times where policement and education/learning wasnt a thing. So, i cant believe any of these "religions", but i can believe in a God if you prove to me he exists, or at least havea compelling argument that gives it high probability and logic.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, would you say spirituality is the consideration of the supernatural or things beyond what we know without worship of them?

Religion doesn't make sense for me

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
