Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is it that Wii U's name failed it but Xbox One's didn't?

Which console has the better name?

Wii U 110 27.09%

Xbox One 109 26.85%

Yo Mama 187 46.06%

Total:406

Well the Kinect part of the XB1 which is more focused on casuals did fail, so...

Because it's the easier excuse to come and allows them to ignore the harshiest truth.

Because the xbox one is not a fail..

Xbone is damned funny. Wii U is just bleh. It's better to have a funny name than a bleh name.

While Wii U's failure to connect with the market is, IMO somewhat down to the name, though only in a relatively minor way, whatever success Xb one is enjoying in the market (which lets face it is really only in the USA UK and a small handful of other minor markets) has almost nothing to do with the name; other than the fact that for 3 generations in a row people have been trained to recognise Xbox as being the name of the Microsoft console, so there is familiarity. OTOH if MS had revealed Xb one without DRM shenanigans, and if it had put out a with Kinect sku ($499) and a without Kinect sku ($399) then I ythink it would be enjoying relative success in more countries than it is now.

Who knows what would have happened if Wii U came out without a gamepad at $250, and went for the pretty simple package of "NOW with HD games" and Wiimotion plus right out of the gate? The name might not have stood in the way of success at all and it could have been the market leader for the second generation running.

It's because the xb1 has had many other problems, beyond the specs (which are an even bigger problem for the wii u) ... If you really think the names are what brought down any of these two consoles you are in denial with their real weaknesses.

now, xbox one is not an inspiring name, no matter how you slice it... And the product is far from being a success, the only times it sells well is when there are serious deals or price drops, and even then this seems to be mostly in only one territory, I'd say that it at least did not meet any sales target MS had set for its device (remember they expected to sell a billion pf those over 10 years or so).

A large part of the problem is the consumer base that made the Wii a commercial success. I don't particularly care who agrees or disagrees, but the majority of the buyers were "Blue Ocean" consumers who weren't previous video game console buyers and not surprisingly, weren't conversion consumers who remained game console buyers after buying a Wii.

Yes, there was some confusion over whether the Wii U was an upgrade (a gamepad controller) or an entirely new platform, but the reality as shown by sales is that most consumers who bought the Wii, didn't buy the Wii U and that's not because they weren't interested in an "upgrade"; it's because they weren't interested in the Wii anymore.

It wasn't in the name. The very consumer base that made the Wii a commercial success simply abandoned game consoles as if it were a trend.

Well IMO X1's actually failed a little. You know there are plenty of jokes about that name and the "all in one" thing is no more because they removed kinect from the basic bundles so...

Simple, Marketing. The Wii u failed because they continued with the name "Wii" and the Wii had so many accessories that everyone just thought it was and since the majority of Wii owners was old people,  older adults and casuals, they never really got the news for gaming and well... didn't really know what it was. Like come on, all they talked about was the tablet and make it look like the console was just a tablet for like the first year. After that, people just tuned it out so when they finally started marketing it right, it was too late.

Well I think people knew the new Xbox one wasn't the original Xbox been released again 10 years later. Wii u was advertised a a new controller for Wii.

Pretty much.
