Simple, Marketing. The Wii u failed because they continued with the name "Wii" and the Wii had so many accessories that everyone just thought it was and since the majority of Wii owners was old people,  older adults and casuals, they never really got the news for gaming and well... didn't really know what it was. Like come on, all they talked about was the tablet and make it look like the console was just a tablet for like the first year. After that, people just tuned it out so when they finally started marketing it right, it was too late.
