A large part of the problem is the consumer base that made the Wii a commercial success. I don't particularly care who agrees or disagrees, but the majority of the buyers were "Blue Ocean" consumers who weren't previous video game console buyers and not surprisingly, weren't conversion consumers who remained game console buyers after buying a Wii.

Yes, there was some confusion over whether the Wii U was an upgrade (a gamepad controller) or an entirely new platform, but the reality as shown by sales is that most consumers who bought the Wii, didn't buy the Wii U and that's not because they weren't interested in an "upgrade"; it's because they weren't interested in the Wii anymore.

It wasn't in the name. The very consumer base that made the Wii a commercial success simply abandoned game consoles as if it were a trend.
