I think he's referring to the US marketplace.

So, let's stop calling this a "bobbled" launch becasue it wasn't like MS failed to execute on their launch plan. They accomplished their launch plan perfectly - it's just that it was a sh!tty plan. |
I think by bobbled, they mean "failed to execute a good plan".

Depends on the nose, I guess.

The hmz-t3w can be had for a lot less than that now and it wasn't made in big quantities like Morpheus will be, which would drastically reduce the cost of production and materials for Sony. I thought Morpheus had 2 panels, my mistake, but that just makes things cheaper still 1 panel is cheaper than 2 and reduces production time, because people don't have to spend time fiddling about getting 2 panels into the system. Vita's lower resolution panel cost $50 for Sony, back in 2011, it's been 4 years since then, the technology is much cheaper now. As I said costs to make something like this aren't expensive by any means now, hence why we're getting to a stage where it can come out and be released wth the intention to create a big install base. I accounted for all parts that would go into making Morpheus, it's not that complicated really, not when you look into the hardware that goes into making the thing work, it doesn't even need some expensive battery, because it's connected through a power coard, maybe the retail unit would have a battery. I stand by what I said, $99 is probably the break even price of the hardware, costs of boxing and shipping maybe add $10 to that figure, $129 would be a profit, $19 of profit is far from suicidal, actually it's probably just right and most people that are interested in Morpheus would happily pay that, they could probably get a bundle deal with 2 games for $199 and Sony will be happy with selling a couple of million units on launch day and 10% of the PS4's install base buying it over the life of the console.
Your kinect example is irrelevent to this argument, we're talking about a plastic headset, with foam, an OLED panel, sensors and some LED lights, $100 is probably even profitable for this kind of tech, kinect costing way more than production to buy is Microsoft's business decision, it has absolutely nothing to do with how Sony works.
The cheaper Morpheus is the more people will buy it and they will buy a boat load of games for it too. |
Interesting, I hope you're right. I'll buy two for that price :)
It could really be a game changer at $129.
As for hololens, I guess MS might make the same choice as with Kinect. It seems more suited for work/research related applications like Kinect.

Hooray for actually reading! Noticed the same, chuckled.

Globally in USA it is 15% GAP +-, and this year it have been like 30%... a big nose still.

I think not. Looking at PS4 and Xbox One US sales its pretty much a tie. Or not that huge a gap to call PS4 the winner of the 8th Gen (US) console war.
It's somewhat incomprehensible to narrow the perspective down to one country. The console war envelopes the 'whole' globe.
What i think he had in mind, that Microsoft had a good starting point and was on Sonys heels at the beginning, with the possibility to stay close - even though they bobbled the launch. Compared to the first Xbox, which was dead on arrival. To be considered, he is saying this now, when we are only one and a half year into the 8th generation. This "war" isn't over, not by a long shot. So all he is doing is giving a little projection. A legitmate one i'd say. Because it ain't over till the fat lady sings. MS has inarguably some system-sellers up the sleeve.
In short: Only the future will tell if he is right or wrong.
Hunting Season is done...

That's another reason why Sony will probably want to release at as low a price as possible, if it's cheaper then the potential for Multiple buys of Morpheus per console can also increase the install base, assuming that 2 or more headsets can work per one console, which is probably unlikely in anything but undemanding titles.
Maybe Sony will have some kind of supplimentary processing option for people that want to have multiple headsets connected to each console.
Maybe this could be an incentive for Sony to drop the price of PS4 down to $299/£249, outside of the regular price cut factor (Sony usually drops the price of their new consoles down by $100 pretty quickly, like within a year of launch).
Another price cut down to $249/£199 by Fall 2016 seems very likely.
I don't know about Hololens, it's similar parts wise (frame, panel, sensors, tracking system), although the panel tech being transparent may add to the costs, although it may not, MS may be forced to take a hit on Hololens retail price at launch to try to stay competitive. Assuming it can run on XB1, it's not clear about whether it's a PC thing.
MS may be forced to add an additional APU & memory in a separate console for Hololens to work with XB1.
