Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon Direct 7th May

Worst direct ever.

At launch we get:

- one online mode (the other is locked till enough players reach level ten)
- 5 multiplayer maps
- 28 singleplayer levels that each last around 5 minutes.

This game is going to bomb hard on metacritic. How did this take more than a year to develop?

Not to seem overly negative here, but that content does seem spread a little thin. Maybe they should have delayed this? But then again that wouldn't have pleased anyone either....this is at the very least an...interesting release strategy, reminds me of Destiny..

Glad to hear there's free updates later but I don't understand why they can't be given at the start. If X comes before the big August update, I'll just buy that instead and see how Splatoon is after that update.

Looks like I was right about the most of the direct being jank huh?

However you couldn't have missed the free updates part, so definitely not the worst direct, but yeah I wonder how this game is gonna get reviewed with it's content broken up like this.

Finished watching the part again. So all those updates will be free... It's an odd way to handle things and i understand the logic behind it, but it kinda sucks, I just want to dive in and test everything out.

Welp, the customizable options will be coming!!! :D

..in August... :( at least it's coming...

They seem to want to increase the volume of players in the online modes at launch, hence why they reduce all the varieties at launch. An example is the ranked mode.

Thats what I was thinking. Their release strategy seems like a method of keeping the community playing for a long time and centralized which I am totally fine with.

Watched it again, they're deliberatly holding back content (the paint brush for example). One of the new multiplayer maps is the exact same thing as level 8 from singleplayer. This stuff is ready, why delay it?

We've seen the paintbrush in vids for half a year now... It should be there from the start.

It is the method of building up the game, TF2 was famous for it. I honestly wish this was on the PC, priced at 30 bucks with gear being charged money but you being able to get basic gear. The PC audience would have loved this game, and this could have replaced the hole being left by Tf2 (since you can only play Tf2 so much), Nintendo fans just complain and complain no matter what.

All the free update stuff is pretty great...new modes, new maps, new matchmaking. Peeps need to chill.

Yeah. Everyone should be excited that Nintendo is selling an empty glass for $60 this month and then filling it little by little with water every few weeks afterwards.

Free updates to an anemic base game is so great.

I hope it backfires and leads to no one buying the game lol.

Nintendo games have always had plenty of content at launch. I expect nothing less from them, but this is a lot less.
