Forums - Gaming Discussion - The strongest and more expensive console will win this generation, it never happened before.

Most powerful? Yes.
Most expensive? No.

Haha and? Price performance is what matters (As long as the price of entry isn't too high). I always was amused by how people acted like being more powerful was a BAD thing for sales. It is a good thing when price accordingly.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

Because PS4 is not a beast so it launched at a very nice price range.

Mostly though it nothing to do with power and everything to do with games+other features.

N64- cartridges being too small, arriving late to the party
Xbox- New brand, lack of established games, ugly box= uphill battle
PS3- Price, which is more to do with bluray then anything else.

Graphical prowess is always a competitive edge, but it can't compensate for lack of support and unreasonable pricing.

Exactly.  The other consoles had trouble not because they were "Too Powerful," but because of other factors.  And for the record, last gen was pretty much a 3-way tie.

Yep but at what costs? In the end it will bring no profits at all only losses. Look at the PS3, Sony was saying that it made profits but in the end it looses billions...

Wait how did you come to this conclusion?

The absence of evidence is NOT the evidence of absence...

Not understanding why people think because MS can price cut there system to a low price, means others can do the same. From what I know the PS4 is using more expensive hardware which only means that X1 will always have the price advantage. As years pass the X1 could and possibly overtake the PS4 in sales, we don't know yet and its way too early to tell. Remember it took the PS3 7 years to equal 360 sales and i wouldn't be a surprise if it took the X1 the same amount of time.

At the end of the day sales don't bother me ands you would be stupid to think a product is better because it sells more. Toyota Camry outsell Mercedes C-Class, so what, does it mean the Camry is a better car? Hell no.

What matters more is if the company managers to make a profit out of its sales. MS could sell X1s for $10 and claim winner becuase it top sales charts, this is why sales prove nothing. Profit>Sales, Quality>Sales, Games>Sales.

Lol, no.

Wii made a lot more profit than the PS3, xbox360 and PSP combined.

And they kind of did... Microsoft and Nintendo shot themselves in the foot. All Sony had to do is side step the mess and go, "That's not us!". Insta-win. Sony won the 8th generation back at E3 2013.

Sure, being competent and making the right calls is lucky... Guess Sony was luck 4 times in a row.

Not so lucky with the PSP (huge piracy issues because they didn't use cartridges), PS3 (lost Sony many billions) and PS Vita.

Colecovision

Sega Masteystem

SNK Neo Geo AES

Nintendo 64

Xbox

PS3

They all failed what the PS4 is acomplishing now, winning this console generation with the strongest Hardware and the higher price tag. Even after the xbox 1 got its price drop and is now cheaper than the ps4 it still cant keep up with ps4 in sales. The ps4 still hasnt got a price drop and went from being 100$ cheaper now to 50-70$ more expensive than the xbox 1, think about that.

Are gamers now more enlighted when it comes to graphics and Hardware?

Last gen the Wii has won which was almost a gamecube and a lot weaker than the ps3 and xbox 360. I think this is the reason why this generation is a lot weaker in comparison to the last one because the less expensive consoles have won, espacially the Wii. In this generation all 3 tried to be as much profitable as possible, even MS as we have seen had a back-up plan without the kinect.

I think the next console generation will have a lot more horse power dueto the ps4 winning this generation and setting the example for the next consoles.

Opinions?

Every time this argument comes out it seems whoever brings it up also think this was the only factors (and that there are direct comparisons with previous "generations" possible)

 - Concurrent consoles never launched so close to each other

 - The coleco vision launched closer to the NES than the Atari 2600, this was not 1970s technology in there!

 - The Neo-Geo home system was not only much more expensive than the SNES, Genesis, TG-16, the games were also 3 or 4 times more expesive, and it had very few titles compared to other 16-bit machines!

 - The N64 was released after the PS1, what 18 months to two years? it also had serious drawbacks, a small selection of titles... many had very low quality textures compared to the PS1 or Saturn... often the frame rate was sub par, despite its benefits it was not 100% better for everything someone could want to do in a game.

Again wiht the xbox, it was expensive at first, but it also launched much later than the PS2, the masses had already made their choice at this point, sadly because it was really a better machine for gaming!

PS3 - it was more expensive, but I think MS focussed too much on the English market (US and UK).... and well the Wii was a wildcard... I honestly think that you could have listed either the PS3 or the 360 here as both have benefits and weaknesses as far as gaming goes, as well as media playback... they're both "the most powerful" in different ways.

Yes. It's a car that appeals to more people's wants/needs than a Mercedes C-Class. Better is subjective. Some people might see a Mercedes C-Class as useless.

Sony is topping sales charts at full price while the xbox one is not. The PS4 is winning the price war before it starts. The xbox one will have to try to beat or catch up with the PS4 a different way.
