Forums - Nintendo - What If There Are More Than 2 NX Hardware Variants?

Actually, given that you need some 3x as much power from 540p to 1080p, it is.

I would even go as far as to suggest 5TFLOPS for console is ok (given that next PS/XBOX are expected to be around 15TFLOPS, so that would give 3rd parties enough power to make ports), and with additional settings adjustment, both 0.5TFLOPS and 5TFLOPS versions would be able to have same Nintendo 1st party games.

So a fusion, but the home console will have two variants within a quarter year?

I think that is unlikely..

Think of NX as a platform itself ... like STEAM. Or iOS.

Not as any singular device.

With a unified platform that shares software, there's not an issue of a lack of software.

Think of it like that. There's nothing unusual about a new Macbook Pro and a new Macbook Air released 2-3 months of each other.

Some people prefer the Macbook Air because it's all they need and they don't want to spend 3 gs on a notebook ... for others Macbook Pro is what they need for others still they don't want a notebook and the home iMac works great for them.

This is actually a great set up for consumers. Choose what you want, no more fetishizing/wanking off to hardware, you want a portable, fine, you want a home console, fine, you don't want a wacky/underpowered "family console", fine. Everyone can have what they want.

Ya I think we will see 3 form factors, portable, tablet & console.

What do you think about dilenating the consoles too?

I like the idea of a "family NX" to fulfil Nintendo's ever present requirement for a "family friendly" machine at a family friendly cost and perhaps an emphsis on a new controller that's wacky/different.

Then a pro console for more hardcore users.

What exactly would the the difference between the family & pro skus?

Why?

Make game
Having in mind your 3 rigs/variants

Make Ultra several levels of gfx settings   e.g  ultra  high medium (like on PC) voila

You either have to make 3 versions of world geometry (or use 2 additional levels of tesselation) or you just use the lowest common denominator and and always keep the weakest devices geometry then the result would be something like all the handheld/phone to console/PC port like  Resident Evil Revelations 3DS vs PC

1-1.2 TFLOP processor the "Family Console" with emphasis on a new wacky/non-traditional controller. $249.99 price point. Smaller console.

3+ TFLOP for the Pro Console, highest end graphics, better than PS4 graphics, comes with a standard pro controller and perhaps the "wacky pad" can be included too. $349.99 price point. Somewhat larger console.

I'm not opposed to the idea bit I'm not sure if it is necessary. We both agree that Nintendo needs to start making all games available on all their devices in the future, would a 3+ TFLOPS console and a 500 GFLOP handheld/tablet be able to share a library or is that power gap too big?

To me that seems like extra power for the sake of extra power that probably won't get used. If the standard console is already playing games like Mario 3D World 2/Galaxy 3, DKC Returns 3, Pikmin 4, Mario Kart 9, Smash Bros 5 at 1080p/60fps than I don't really see the need for a console 3x as powerful unless it has exclusives that take advantage of the hardware but that's kinda going against the whole idea of making NX a unified family.

No? Nintendo surely is stupid, but not THAT stupid.

The order of release is likely the other way around though, a home console first and a portable system later. Hardware becomes cheaper and more power efficient over time.

Mr. Iwata did mention one of the things about unified/shared platform is that you can have more than just the two traditional form factors.

"What we are saying is that we would like to integrate software development methods, operating systems, and built-in software and software assets for each platform so that we can use them across different machines," Iwata said. "This means that if we manage to integrate our platforms successfully, we may in fact be able to make more platforms."

"At the moment, we only have our current handheld devices and home consoles because if we tried to make more platforms, our development resources would be spread too thinly. The more we can share software across different platforms, the more development resources will be left for something else. Platform integration does not mean creating one type of platform, but the point is that the united method of software development will enable us to share our most precious software assets across different hardware."

I don't think they meant to release more than 1 platform in one year, it is very complicated to release only two new platform im one year and that's why Nintendo usually don't realise home and handheld at same year.

I think he meant that they would maybe release new platforms much faster than before (like 2-4 years) and that they could support equally new and old platforms because of integrated software development and same architecture hardware.
