Forums - PC Discussion - Is the mouse your favorite gaming controller?

NO!

Neither mouse nor keyboard is the best. I'd probably pick the 360 controller as best followed by PS3 controller, followed by keyboard/mouse, followed by Wiimote

have you ever played a PC game before? and I mean a good PC game like Half-Life, World of Warcraft, Warcraft, Diablo, Battlefield, NfS, Final Fantasy 11, Gunz the Duels, AudioSuft?

the only genre I have found that console controllers works better at is fighting. Even then its questionable.

In general the expansive ability of a computer give a huge edge over any system, after an initial purchase a simple and low cost occasional upgrade keeps it on the graphical edge, and the mouse seems to still allow the most comfort and agility needed in nearly all geanras, though racing and fighting should be controlled with a gamepad, RTSs, FPSs, MMOs, RPGs(in general benefit better with mouse controls) though can be tooled to work with a controller and so forth...... though this is my opinion and a general PC gamer with consoles ont he side like an Xbox and Wii...

That's still not the same as the computer fps's, you don't get the camera centered on the enemy, you gotta stay on him yourself.

Why should it be the same? You can play the whole game without using it at all, if you like. Personally, I like the distinction between camera control and gun control. Most PC FPSes link the two directly together, as if the bullets were actually coming out of your eyes.

You could easily implement the same feature in a PC shooter by binding lock-on to the shift key, or something. Would feel a little strange for breaking the mouselook world that PC shooters have been tied to for a decade now, but it opens up some interesting gameplay possibilities.

But, like I said, it's not the same. It takes more skill.

But that has nothing at all to do with the controller. The lock-on control is a matter of programming. If you want more challenge, just don't use it.

but if you disabled it, you'd have to move the wiimote cursor to the end of the screen to turn, unless you can make the aiming cursor stay centered on the screen? it would still be 2 different styles.

I would dread the day a Wii-FPS does that. Unless you use some sort of device to hold your hand steady 100% of the time, it'd be so jittery. Heck, when it comes to my mouse (mainly with Valve games), my mouse sensitivity is pretty high so I can keep on the look out and it's can be a little jittery if I'm not steady.

that's what I mean, the wiimote is great and all, but it just can't do the same things as a mouse and keyboard, in fact, no gaming controller can. and the M & KB can't do some of the things controllers can but it destroy's controllers when it comes to FPS's.

3 examples:

1. Battlefield (series)

2. Call of duty(series)

3. F.E.A.R  (series)

4 games you can compare:

1.Call of Duty 2 (on PC and x360)

2. Battlefield 2 and battlefield modern combat (on PC, x360, ps2, xbox)

3. F.E.A.R (on PC, x360, ps3)

4. Far Cry (on PC, x360, wii, Xbox)

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... It's easy if you have a small bounding box. If you're facing an enemy, move forward and to the left. You'll have to move your targeting cursor to the right to keep aiming at the enemy, causing your camera to start turning to the right. Tah dah! You're circle strafing.

Mouse+Keyboard is the best for FPS, RTS, and adventure games.

Good thing I have a gamepad, joystick, and racing wheel for my PC. lol

M & K = best for FPS, RTS and any game where pinpoint accuracy of a 'point and click' nature is key to the game. I've been playing more and more FPS on consoles, and its certainly ok, but the input precision simply can't match K & M and won't without major redesign.

However, there are many other genres (platforming for one - say something like Ratchet and Clank) where a gamepad is superior, or something like Wii controls for titles like Wii Sports.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

you still wouldn't have as much freedom, like what If you needed to run away? or go behind cover?  And I'm not talking about one of those "press A" Events either, your description confused me a little also.

My favorite for RTS and certain FPS games.

depends on the game. I'd actually say the dualshock or 360 controller is the most versatile and therefore feels good with most games. the dualshock is great for playing snes roms. kb/m is great for FPS games, and the wiimote is also ok for certain games. I also think the wiimote is basically a prototype for motion/ir controls and a more refined version will surely improve upon the current pitfalls of the wii controller.
