Forums - Microsoft - An Unbiased Review: Ori and The Blind Forest - (An Instant Classic) - Video Review

Finally, and kinda randomly, but you have a good vocal tone that lends itself for a spoken video style review. Keep it up!

I think his delivery comes off as forced and unnatural. Especially when it comes to his intonation. Quite a few miles away from deliveries like GT for example. But if you're speaking strickly voice tone, and nothing else, sure.

Ori has a much stronger focus on platforming than combat.

Yes, I mentioned that in my post.

"I get that Ori is more platformer focused than the more action focused games like Metroid and Castlevania, but the core concept is still the same."

The game is played in one open world in which you travel around, fight enemies, and find new abilites in order to go and find previously inaccessable areas. Again, you could compare Halo and Metroid Prime, since they're both technically first person shooters, but many would still find it not exactly the most on point comparison since their progression and level designs are so different from one another. Hence the pushback and confusion from a lot of responses here.

Only 0.3 points better than Grow Home, that doesn't sound promising. How long is Ori?

Though we realize im specifically talking about platforming when talking about the two.  While you can argure that Metroid and Ori has similarites, which is true, you can also make the same case on why it is similar to the top platformers such as Mario.  While they both are different, they also are similar.  And in this case the platforming is just as good as, if not better than the platformers i meantioned.  While i could have said, it is the best Metroidvania game ive played, which is also true, i can also say its the best 2D platformer ive played.  That is because it is both.

Im not really replying to people on the subject, but since yours was lengthy i thought id clarify that for you.

In other news, Metroid Prime shits all over Halo.

He's made his point, and you and I have made ours. Whether we agree or disagree, let's move on and not derail this thread please.

On topic though, the real problem with Ori is that it's not good enough to stand on its own. That's why Mario is needed to bring in the clicks.

I see what you did there.

Great review Jay! What I like about Ori is the story it tells without spoken English words; the contrasting themes of light and dark, and death and rebirth elicit emotional feelings of angst and calmness. The game tests your abilities with the dungeons that lead to a climactic finish with the chase sequences as well. Most importantly the game does player choice and exploration better than most platform games I've played. Difficulty can be utterly brutal at times. The later enemies are challenging to take down and the spike can be frustrating. My only real complaint with the game is like you said, how it locks you out of your save. I also really enjoyed the characters and the twists that accompanied the game as well. The ending was something incredibly special and the devs should be commended for it.

Hope we get a sequel too; MS should either buy the studio (giving them an incrdible platform dev), or continue to finance their games.

9.5/10 for me! Keep up the great work!

Story is ok... But the Tree that narrates the story is an asshole.
