Forums - Microsoft - An Unbiased Review: Ori and The Blind Forest - (An Instant Classic) - Video Review

Apples and oranges, right? Aside from being 2d, what does Mario have in common with Ori?

Around the Network

Ori is the best game I've played so far this year. I agree with most of the points made about the gameplay and about the "instant classic" part. And that soundtrack sure is pure gold. Particularly the music playing during the escape from the Ginso tree... That's as epic as epic gets for that type of games.

That game is a gem and should be played by everyone who enjoys the Metroidvania types of games. The comparison with Mario is a ludicrous one, and I do wonder why the OP mentioned it. Seems to me like it's nothing more than clickbait. Certainly not an unbiased way to present a review, that's for sure.

A can't believe people get hung up over the title of "An unbiased review."

All it is, is a title; nothing in life can be objective when giving ones own thoughts on a review.

Will check out the review later tonight.

I still have to play this.

I would def recommend it.  If you dont have XBO and play on your PC you could get it on steam.

Idk, it looks like an "indie" game to me

(I know it's not but I feel like the game doesn't look like an non-indie game if you get what i am trying to say. Not trying to downplay the game, just saying it looks like that in the sense how Journey is)

No that is fine, i understand what you mean.  I would consider it a AA game myself

I think I'll pick this up for my PC when I've 100%ed Super Meat Boy. I always need to have 1 2D platformer that can scratch my sporadic 2D platformer itches. Which is odd because I prefer 3D platformers, but sometimes I just have to play a 2D playformer.

I know everyone has harped on this, but I wanted to put in my own two cents on the issue that's unfortunately overshadowed your review.

In the video you already mention that Ori comes from the highly decorated and beloved "Metroidvania" style of Platform Adventures, but then go on to compare Ori to games like Rayman, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario Bros.

It's like comparing Metroid Prime to Halo: Combat Evolved. Sure, they're both first person shooters, but one is a linear style game spaced by distinct and seperate levels (Rayman, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario Bros.) while the other offers an open world for you to explore while you gather new abilites to open previously inaccessable areas (Ori). There is some comparison to make with their core mechanics (in this case both Mario and Ori use their movement abilities to traverse the area to reach their goal), but the ways in which they achieve their goals varys considerably.

Games like Super Metroid, Casltevania: Symphony of the Night, Guacamelee, Shantae & the Pirate's Curse, Axiom Verge... these are the games that share the most similarities with Ori & the Blind Forest, and should ultimately be what Ori is compared to. I get that Ori is more platformer focused than the more action focused games like Metroid and Castlevania, but the core concept is still the same.

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but these two genres (Platformers and Platform Adventures/Metroidvanias) are some of my favorite of all time and their distinctions make them very unique genres from one another.

Speaking of Axiom Verge, I think it would be interesting if you did a compare/contrast with Ori. Both are Metroidvania styled games that have just come out to high praise and acclaim. I think it'd be interesting to see in what ways they're similar and how they're different... and in the end seeing how they compare to one another.

Finally, and kinda randomly, but you have a vocal tone that really lends itself for a spoken video style review. Keep it up!

It means he doesnt think Mario games are as good. Even though the latest Mario game has a 93 on Metacritic(The same score he gave Ori) and Ori has an 89.

So hes biased...

Im just going to go ahead and point out to you and a few others that im specifically talking about 2D platformers, not 3D.  Two when i say its has nothing on Ori, it means that theyre at least of the same quality, not that one or the other is better. Three,  Kinis is right.

Lastly if you guys are not mature enough to handle a headline then I will change it but i stand by what i said.

Aren't i always? And he didn't even disprove anything that I said lol.

Ori has a much stronger focus on platforming than combat.  While it has similarities with Metroid and others, it also has similarities with Rayman, Mario, etc  Its very much a mix of two genres and the platforming itself is just as good as Mario, Rayman, etc
