Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft’s HoloLens Looks More Promising Than VR, but May Be Ahead of Its Time

I think VR is gonna flop just like it did years ago. I just don't see it taking off. I see it like when they were trying to re-push the 3D craze and no one bought into it. I think its gonna be the same with VR(as far as the gaming side goes).

I see Hololens having the long future because it in the long run i feel it will have more use in the real world than something like Oculus and Sony's VR

Exactly,

VR is just a kids toy. AR just does so much more.

meh I see VR as much of a gimmick as 3D was,but to each their own

Then you got a bad opinion, the support vr has proves you quite wrong.

But yes to each their own.

Nope not a bad opinion. Just a different opinion than your own.

Thanks :)

An opinion can be good or bad and it hinges on the facts backing it.  Your opinion has nothing in support of it, other then your feelings.

I think VR and AR are converging techs, the Hololens seems to already be able to deliver almost VR like whole changing of your surroundings going by previews, while VR headsets surely will get equipped with cameras and have an easy way to switch to a real world view, which could be "augmented" with virtual objects

I doubt anything that requires putting stuff on your head would become a hit and cheap enough for most people until well into the 2020's.....

Not every one is broke, a few 100 is nothing to many a people.

While even the poor will buy into this if ts popular and for the simple fact it will be a great escape from their every day shitty lives.   Tehy will but it the same way they buy +$200 jordan shoes.

i can see card games playing well on it like yugioh anime type of gameplay

I didn't think of this before but that would be awesome! Really, most of the best uses most of us can think of are outside gaming. I particularly like the idea of a not having to look at my phone or a SatNav when driving because the thing projects arrows into my field of view. I don't think it's ahead of its time, I just hope it gets enough support to stay. I for one am going to buy a dev kit and write apps for it.

I would actually argue that VR has endless possibilities because it has endless realities, while AR is confined to just the reality that we are currently living in.

How is VR "a kids toy"?

Do you not value the applications of VR in say....the military?  Or do you think that war is just another game to you?

A kids toy:  Something that could provide combat training, combat simulation, flight simulation, vehicle simulation, battleifield simulation, and medic training is childs play right?  Or how about providing virtual reality to our wounded soldiers who are now disabled?  Virtual reality would rehabilitate patients to help them walk again or give those an experience who may have lost their limbs in a war or an accident.

Now this is just one specific area that I decided to pull up out of the multitude of possibilites that VR can provide.

I fail to see AR surpassing VR in sales or reception. Two breeds of the same creature no doubt, but anything that can be done in AR can be done in VR while the inverse is not true. AR is extremely limited by your environment, more specifically your home. Anyone thinking they're going to walk around outside with HD wireless AR is living a pipe dream with where current technology is at.

Something that the OP seems to ignore is the hindrance in procedurally generated AR as well. I look forward to seeing how this tech actually performs in the real world. (Blu-ray vs HDDVD?)

Yet again I'm waiting for Microsoft to deliver on a promise.

Sure their are possiblitles for both VR and AR but what do we see the current VR devs trying to do? They are all trying to makes games but with AR it looks to be trying to change the way we live our everyday lives.  Just look at how Microsoft presented Hololens and see just how different it is. I was all in with VR until I saw Hololens and started to read more into AR.
