I'm not going to get into a huge debate here, but I think that there is a general problem with anonymity on the internet which is where most of the "sexism" comes from. I think the hubub around sexism within games themselves and within many communities has been overblown and what problems we do have, don't really need to be remedied through academia.

I definitely agree that the anonymity of the internet fuels the undercurrent of sexism, racism, and homophobia that pops up with alarming frequency in the video game community. But I don't think anonymity explains fully the problem. There are many other factors, including the history of this medium as a "boy's club," the subject matter of video games, and the fact that many of the most vocal video game fans are emotionally unintelligent and immature.

Isn't there sexism in mostly everything though? lol.

Yes, sexism is a rampant problem across all industries. But, as active members of the video game community, we can effect positive change on this front.

I believe there's a problem because I find sexual harassment on video game forums and in online gaming unacceptable. I find threats of violence, rape, and death against any person, man or woman, unacceptable. And I find the propagation of centuries old sexual stereotypes unacceptable.

Sexism is a little too much of generalized term "one size fits all" in my opinion. It lumps everything from gender roles to rape into a confusing mess.  Gender roles or sexual stereotypes is open to debate whether it's bad at all if people can swap roles at a whim. I'm completely fine with anyone wanting to go the more traditional route or go for a more modern lifestyle. People should be able to do that without judgement from others in spite of political agendas.

Sexual harashment and rape is a different story. Those are a world wide problem and should be addressed in that setting. I disagree with any people trying to turn video games into some kind of battleground to fight sexual harashment and rape. It's not appropriate or the place for it.
