I hope the Western performance/ reception of Suiko and Suiko 2 eventually leads to this being brought to EU and NA.

Suikoden 3 was awesome, one of my favorite RPGs ever. Some things didn't work so well, as they tried to transition to 3D, but other aspects worked beautifully. It was a bit different from the rest of the series, sure, but that in no way means it was a worse game. In fact, I have it only a bit behind S2 as my favorite Suikoden, which is saying a lot.
The only real criticism I have is that, even though the focus is split between four characters, the game was still pushing you toward the lamest one, the typical shounen boy hero. That kind of annoyed me, as he was the only one I didn't care much about, but that probably has more to do with my personal tastes. Chris, the female knight, is one of my ALL TIME favorite RPG heroes, as she had a ton of personal conflicts to sort through, and Geddoe, the quiet mercenary, is really cool and interesting. Thomas, who becomes the one who builds up the castle hub, is also fun and engaging to play.
Be warned, though, that this is the embodiment of a story-driven game. There is a lot going on, with the way it's all woven together from separate points-of-view, betrayals, and legends. It's not for someone who just want to hop in and slay monsters.
Finally, the villains in this were wonderful. I don't even know what else to say about them. There aren't many game villains that I've shed real tears over.

Bloody hell. Every time I get excited from talking about a Suikoden game, about five minutes later I get SO INCREDIBLY BITTER AND ANGRY.
Gao!!

Suikoden III was a serious flawed experience. The battle system of six party members only allowed for the control of three while the other three acted on their own with little to no intelligence. The background music was a bore fest that put you asleep. The transition from 2D to 3D made traveling awkward and cumbersome. The one on one battles were a joke compared to the previous two games. The dungeons had no sense of danger. Just a bad game all around. Play it to experience it, but it fell far short from the I and II.
| arcaneguyver said: So, Suikoden 3 is great. It does not play quite like the first two - IIRC you can have only four characters in your party at a time, and combat is slower. The area the game takes place isn't super interesting right from the start, and there's a village of duckmen. Also, the beginning has a sorta lame Rashomon style "see the same scene from three perspectives" situation. And some of the few returning characters look nothing like they used to. |
6 party members + guest/support unit. You can only control 3 pairs of characters though. Was an interesting choice, but I'm actually playing through it right now. Still been fun.
I have a physical copy for the PS2 still haven't beat it would buy it again if it gets released in the NA PSN store.
This is great news :) though Id love to see a hd remaster at some stage :)
