On what basis though?

I know more people who like anime than like movies. Wow, the world must be crazy about animes!

but they don't fight about because movies have more sales than anime.

Again, sweeping generalization of people you don't know. When was the last time you've been to a movie/anime centric website or forum?

Fanboys are present in any medium and you can bet your ass that they will grasp for anything that will make their fandom look better than others. That includes sales numbers and all fandoms.Justin Bieber fans proclaiming that he is superior because he sold more albums than X musician. Sound familiar?

Again, just because your experience is mostly on the gaming side doesn't mean it's happening less in other mediums. Look at gaming websites and how often they publish sales numbers and then look at movie websites and look how often they publish sales.

dude, do you know the meaning of "more than" it's not a generalization, it's everywhere on the internet. I'm not attacking gamers, I'm just talking about an actual trend. Anyway, my question was simple if you disagree or agree just said it, I'm arguing more than I should.

Every hobby of this sort has its number watchers. Music has charts, movies have opening weekend ticket sales (and for bigger movies, WW gross), TV has ratings, etc.

Video games fans care about sales more than any other entertainment because lots of people are not fans of games per se, but fans of the companies that make the hardware. It would be the equivalent of people wishing that Sony BMG would go under because he/she is a fan of EMI and wished that every future music to be issued by EMI.

That comes from the fact that you have to buy some kind of hardware to play a game (including PC), but we have to keep in mind that the monopoly didn't start with videogames per se, but was largely enforced by Nintendo with NES. Unlike other industries, it looks like video games fans happily embraced the monopolistic culture, so that we see people wishing that the game market become a monopoly for hardware makers.

That is why we see much more talk about about sales in video games than other form of entertainment. While sales are always part of arguments in other media (movies, music, etc), unlike other form of media where we see people discussing only sales of certain works or art and entertainment they like, we see lots of fanboys in video games sales threads evidently discussing sales only on the hardware perspective, wishing that games sell well on their favorite platform regardless of the quality just because they want the company they are fanboys of to dominate the market; and at the same time wishing that games on the other platforms fail so that the game makers may switch to their favorite platform.

awesome answer!

Sports fans are by far worse. Given the right curcumstances I would love to throw down with a certain Packers fan. Bar fights are always plausible with Raiders and Chiefs fans.

But yeah, I play a lot of platforms because I am not a tool to one company like many seem to be here.

Every entertainment medium has fanboys and fans who care about their idols or favorite product, but the only entertainment medium where I see that a lotof people care about sales is in the gaming industry. For example, you don't see Madonna fans saying that Lady gaga sucks because madonna has more money or more sales, or you don't see Cleveland fans saying that Lebron sells more tickets and Jerseys than kobe, so kobe sucks. They use the product or idol to fight "Lady gaga sings better or is more creative than Madonna" "Lebron is better right now, kobe is too old" "Inception is an amazing movie!, better than Avatar!! (avatar sold more)" etc. So why sales are so important to gamers? why gamers are so proud about sales?

This is a charts website so I'm not specifically talking about vgchartz, just in general.

Edit: why we use sales to fight? that's the real point of the thread.

I don't know about anyone else but I care about sales because unlike some other things, sales affect the quality of the system's software that I purchased. If a console sells bad, the third party software is usually bad. So sales actually matter in that respect.

This forum is centralized around game sales, so of course the people here would care about them...
