Forums - Gaming - Why video games fans care about sales more than any other entertainment business?

onionberry said:

Every entertainment medium has fanboys and fans who care about their idols or favorite product, but the only entertainment medium where I see that a lotof people care about sales is in the gaming industry. For example, you don't see Madonna fans saying that Lady gaga sucks because madonna has more money or more sales, or you don't see Cleveland fans saying that Lebron sells more tickets and Jerseys than kobe, so kobe sucks. They use the product or idol to fight "Lady gaga sings better or is more creative than Madonna" "Lebron is better right now, kobe is too old" "Inception is an amazing movie!, better than Avatar!! (avatar sold more)" etc. So why sales are so important to gamers? why gamers are so proud about sales?

This is a charts website so I'm not specifically talking about vgchartz, just in general.

Personally the only reason i want something have good sales in gaming is so i can get something out of it, like more people will play that game or console, but other then that i dont really much much for game sales, it also strengthens the companies products on what they can do more, but i guess that can be said to anything in the entertainment industry

Because if there's a game that doesn't sell good enough, like Dragon Quest 9, there may not be games coming out for them at all, or in this case, not to the west.

I'm looking at you, Square Enix, oh master of RPG's.(except Final Fantasy after FF7.)

because gamers dont know how to enjoy a game unless it hits x amount of sales :(

Just because you don't see it in your limited view of the world doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Guess how many One Piece die-hards get off to the manga being the best sold shit of all time. Also movie nerds who jerk off to Box Office numbers all the time. Videogame sites rarely talk about sales of video games unless there are statements by the companies or "analysts".

What is talked about a lot though are sales of the platforms which are important to know for everyone who is invested into video games. Because sales directly relate to how much a certain platform is supported and how much money you should sink into it and how much you should expect out of it.

Your comparison is also wrong. The equivalent to console sales in other media would be the amount of new cinemas built, the amount of investement in new sports stadiums and how well the CD/Blu-ray and digital distribution business is doing. There are no clear and concise numbers for those and they're uninteresting anyway since Music, Movie and Sports entertainment are already deeply established in today's society. You won't hear people in fear of the Movie or Sports industry going down due to sub par sales.

So all in all your perception is wrong due to its limited nature.

Because videogames are a lot more expensive to make, movies in the end of the day can always be realized. They are only expensive if you want the most famous actors.

They care more because they have a lower average age and a much, much higher instance of autistic spectrum disorders and internet addiction.

Although I think someone asking this question must be either quite young or suffering from a bad case of recentism. Until downloading became a thing, music fans were obsessed with the charts, who was number 1 and which singles and albums went platinum. When I were a wee shota in the glorious decade of the 90s (obviously only 90s kids are cool enough to remember this), nearly all the top music shows in Britain were chart countdowns and everyone eagerly awaited news of who was top of the pops. This would probably still be the case if sales were still a meaningful way of determining a song's actual popularity.

I said "more than" and "a lot"

Because video games have insane overhead and if they don't succeed theres a good chance we won't see a sequel.

On what basis though?

I know more people who like anime than like movies. Wow, the world must be crazy about animes!
