Video games fans care about sales more than any other entertainment because lots of people are not fans of games per se, but fans of the companies that make the hardware. It would be the equivalent of people wishing that Sony BMG would go under because he/she is a fan of EMI and wished that every future music to be issued by EMI.

That comes from the fact that you have to buy some kind of hardware to play a game (including PC), but we have to keep in mind that the monopoly didn't start with videogames per se, but was largely enforced by Nintendo with NES. Unlike other industries, it looks like video games fans happily embraced the monopolistic culture, so that we see people wishing that the game market become a monopoly for hardware makers.

That is why we see much more talk about about sales in video games than other form of entertainment. While sales are always part of arguments in other media (movies, music, etc), unlike other form of media where we see people discussing only sales of certain works or art and entertainment they like, we see lots of fanboys in video games sales threads evidently discussing sales only on the hardware perspective, wishing that games sell well on their favorite platform regardless of the quality just because they want the company they are fanboys of to dominate the market; and at the same time wishing that games on the other platforms fail so that the game makers may switch to their favorite platform.

awesome answer!
