Forums - Gaming - Onlive *Finally* Shutting Down; Sony buying a lot of their patents

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/04/02/sony-acquires-cloud-gaming-tech-from-game-streaming-service-onlive

Sony Computer Entertainment has acquired the technology patents behind streaming service OnLive.

The terms under which the deal was made have not been shared, but Sony now owns several of OnLive's assets, including its US and International portfolio patents on cloud gaming.

OnLive is a streaming service specializing in cloud-based video game play on multiple devices. Once it begins to cut its services and products, it will downsize and eventually close down.

It will remain active until April 30, and no subscription renewals will be charged as of today, April 2. OnLive adds that those who were charged for their subscription renewal after March 28 will be issued refunds.

Sony has not yet discussed what their plans are with this technology, but it's likely they acquired the patents to add to their game streaming service PlayStation Now. They made a similar move back in 2012 when they purchased the cloud gaming service Gaikai.

Amazing to think SONY pretty much own the tech of the two biggest game-streaming competitors (If you don't include microsoft since they havent really started)

Sony really seem to be serious about this streaming games business, huh...

Welp, RIP Onlive! Hopefully Sony/PSnow will not suffer the same fate

I remember when I was recommended to invest on OnLive, lol.

For what its worth it was a good idea at the time, lots of interesting things were happening there.

This is Sony's long term plan. As they say one day we wont need consoles, we will all just be able to stream the games to our TVs, laptops, tablets, smartphones etc etc. Obviously PSNow in its current form is just the beggining, one day every new game will be available to purchase through this service day 1. They basically want to become a storefront on multiple devices, something that if successful will definitely bring in much higher profits.

Maybe in 10-20 years all of gaming will be Playstation thanks to this and Valve and Nintendo will be licensors of the tech?

WOWZERS!

You can find THQ in the "people also searched for" box when you google Onlive
