It'd be smart to make it backwards compatible with Wii U games. They could increase the poor Wii U software sales if they manage to make the NX sell well.

Nah, we learned from PS4/PS3/Xbox360/XboxOne that you don't need backward compatibility and you can rerelease games from the previous generation and it helps with the library. Not like fans will care.

The WiiU has secondary CPUs for OS etc. If the NX will also have this nothing stops Nintendo from using WiiU/3DS CPUs for the OS stuff and then have a 3DS/WiiU mode where the secondary CPUs act as a 3DS/WiiU CPU instead of dealing with the OS only.

I hope not.
Yes, early adopters and hard core gamers are programmed to think that BC is a major selling point, but what it really means is either:
A) new generation hardware architecture is an evolution of the prior generation, thus allowing for straightforward compatibility (like upgrading a PC with a new CPU, a new GPU and more memory).
B) new generation hardware includes prior generation chipset on logic board, increasing cost and complexity. Cost that could have gone towards increasing memory, more compute units on the GPU, more cache on CPU, etc.
Nintendo would be better off going with the most cost effective solution utilizing the most current chipsets and memory while yielding the most computational power for that cost.
I don't see any benefit in keeping the same PPC architecture; there's no serious development or push towards its improvement. It's actually one of the reasons why Apple went from G5 PPC to Intel years ago.
No, the NX will be its own console with its own architecture (if Nintendo is smart anyway). If you want to play Wii / Wii U games, then buy a Wii U after the price gets heavily discounted once the NX is officially announced.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
My guess is that the NX is a handheld, so yes, it should have backwards compatibility, though it may not be in 3D..

1) theyre dropping the gamepad for a new gimmick (to keep things fresh). 2) theyre not expanding on hardware, its going to be massively differnt design ( = no backwards compatibilty).
Im guessing....... VR glasses? and.... ARM+AMD GPU IP apu (secret sauce: hybrid memory cube system for it)?
hopefully thye go back to standart controllers. |
Ugh anything but VR glasses. VR died a long time ago and needs to stay dead. VR has no place in gaming, shy of giving people tumors.
