The NX or whatever Nintendo's next portable is will probably be able to produce graphics that look like this: Most Japanese may just say "that's good enough". The GBA couldn't really produce expansive, 3D graphics, as such it was limited in the genres it could bring out. But today a portable device can be quite powerful and produce 2D or fairly decent 3D graphics too. |
The NX will not be able to pull of Wii U like graphics. The 3DS can't pull off Wii graphics, and the jump from GameCube to Wii was smaller than the jump from Wii to Wii U.
Unless you expect the NX to launch at like 350$, graphics like that just won't happen. (All this is presuming the NX is a handheld)

Mobile tech is expanding quickly, I expect it to be possible very soon. Actually I think it already is. The problem with devices like the Nvidia Shield is no one is making games specifically for that Tegra X1 chip. But Nintendo will be coding from the ground up for whatever they use so that won't be a problem.
But fundamentally, a 250-300 GFLOP GPU in a portable form factor is definitely doable by second half of 2016.
Not only do I expect NX to be able to handle those types of graphics, I think Zelda U is going to be a launch title for it.

It's easily doable, of course, but Nintendo doesn't want to make a ridiculously overpriced handheld. How many Gflops does the 3DS have again? Isn't it like 5? that would mean a 50-60x increase versus the 3DS to have Wii U like power. That just doesn't seem likely.
Maybe in your dreams. Japan is lost forever in Mobile space.

Oh wow you named 3 JRPGs, you're acting like that is a lot. I'm pretty sure the Xbox had more JRPG than Nintendo consoles and considering Nintendo is Japanese that's really sad.

Mobile chips are cheap, the PowerVR GT7900 is designed for cheap mini-consoles and is a mobile processor ... it outputs a whopping 800 GFLOPS. The Tegra X1 Shield console is only $200 sold at a fat profit with 3GB RAM.
Absolutly, all what now i'm missing for the ps4 would be a new wild arms and a remake or sequel of xenogears:)

The 7900 is ment for notebooks that probably use 35watts+.
So while its a mobile chip... its not really ment for a small handheld.
Still its probably better performance/watt than the Tegra X1 that is around 512 GFLOPs and uses 20watts to do so.
Dragon Quest 11 and Exist Archive are coming next year in japan for PS4 : ) Console-Gaming is coming back, guys.
Exist for PSVita too.
