Forums - Gaming - Rumor: Samsung to buy AMD

I LOVE Samsung.

Don't care who AMD is so go ahead, whatever to help crush iPhone.......and the very very few Apple Tv's that actually still exist.

Problem isthe X86 license, which would be gone as it is valid for AMD and AMD only and not transmutable after a buyout or a merger (unless AMD is the buyer, not the bought one, of course). In other words, it would not only kill most of AMD apart from their ARM Server chips and Grapics cards, it would also forcefully end the production of the chips in the PS4 and Xbox ONE consoles as they are dependent on it's code in their architecture.

Unless Intel would get forced to open the license to everybody, of course. But even then it would take a long court action before this even would happen.

So no, I don't see it happen. And it's not the first time such rumours emerged, far from it.

You got a source for that?

Under point 3, stated multiple times even.

Edit: also check points 6 and 7

The x86 license doesn't transfer to new ownership.

I hope it's not true.

Don't get me wrong, both of them would greatly benefit from this: Samsung (getting atents and an x86 license and AMD getting money, but what about us? Would the Samsung owned AMD still commit to make desktop CPUs and high end graphic cards, markets where Samsung have shown no interest?

Why wouldn't they?

You'd assume so, otherwise they wouldn't be thinking of buying them, would they?

Because AMD competes with both Intel and Nvidia by offering competing products at lower prices, so their profit margins are low. Why would Samsung care for those sectors when they can go for the server market which offers them bigger margins?

And while AMD could sell their products at a higher price to increase their profits, the AMD brand doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to CPUs, and in the GPU front Nvidia has very loyal customers that aren't shy to spent a bit more for their cards, unlike AMD loyals that take the better price/performance of their products to their hearts.

Please excuse my bad English.

I wonder if this will affect Nintendo's NX project. Assuming it is tied with AMD when AMD was dropping hints. Because if a buyout does happen I'm kinda thinking that Nintendo might wanna go have a chat with Nvidia.

Is that confirmation that Samsung is working on a console or something else?

Couldn't Samsung just buy AMD, but keep it running as AMD?

If not they could always provide Samsung a way to be dominant stakeholder, giving them control of the company but technically it would still be AMD.

AMD's continued existence in the tech industry is crucial to keep things competitive, if this allows them to keep going and keep GPUs competitive then I'm all for it.

Hmm, I believe I wrote something about Samsung in the UNITY thread, this makes me kinda worried, Samsung have gained massive power in consumer electronics and computer tech.
