Forums - Nintendo - Pikmin 4 on Wii U or its successor?

Highly unlikely that it will be released for the Wii U, so successor.

Pikmin in my opinion needs a shot in the arm innovationally. It doesn't matter what system the game is on, but I need them to do something drastically different, not in tone or visuals, but in mechanics and scope. I think something better cut in a Metroidvania structure would be fitting. Bouncing from planet to planet or area to area creates a lot of disconnection. Just imagine an open world Pikmin with advancing abilities and cross crossing paths on the way to more substantial treasures, ship pieces, whatever.

I'd rather it be like the first game personally. I thought the first was actually challenging. They're all great games though.

I really liked the 1st game. It put stress on survival and completing your goal before you potentially died. That was very taxing and very good. My gripe was that it was too short. I finished it in a weekend and didn`t need to play it anymore. Maybe they can do a sort of 1 and 2 combined.

The cave system had potential, but Nintendo left it there at its luck. Now, I'm saying this because Pikmin 2 is my favorite game, so really can't say much.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

I hope they release Pikmin on the successful consoles and skip any that are unsuccessful cause I would rather have them make other games than Pikmin unless the console is successful

Hell no. They will probably create a new goal anyway. Each Pikmin game had a diffrent objective and I'm fine about that. But please, no caves from Pikmin 2.

I hope that they release it on the Wii U, but that's because I won't buy a NX (depending on what it actually is) for a long time. I bought the Wii U day one and I regret it a lot.

After replaying the first game somewhat recently I can confirm that it is no more challenging than the other two. It just seems more difficult in retrospect because no one had ever played Pikmin before at the time they first played it.

Actually, the Challenge maps in 2 and 3 present far more of a challenge (go figure) than anything in the first game.

Oh, right, the actual topic. I think it's impossible to say at this point. NX could launch in 2016 or 2017. It could be a handheld or a home console. If it's a handheld launching in 2017, the Wii U successor might not be coming until 2018 -- in that case, I think there's a good chance Pikmin 4 shows up on Wii U. Miyamoto is working on Star Fox right now, so I suppose development of Pikmin 4 might start later this year, if it hasn't already.

If Wii U successor is coming in 2017, I'm thinking that's where Pikmin 4 will be. It's possible that development has already started, since EAD 4 hasn't exactly had a lot on their plate since it launched (only Mario Maker is announced from that studio, which pumped out NSMB2, NSMBU, NSLU, and Pikmin 3 and its DLC within a year and a half). I would expect Miyamoto would want to oversee it, though, and it seems like he'd have his hands full at the moment with not only Star Fox but Giant Robot etc.

Of course, he's also working on the Pikmin shorts. Pikmin being sort of at the forefront of Nintendo's new cross-medium promotion strategy seems significant to me. It's clear the series is very important to Miyamoto. In the end my vote is for Pikmin 4 on Wii U. I think Miyamoto feels about Pikmin 3 the way Retro felt about Donkey Kong Country Returns. Sort of like he didn't quite get to finish what he started.

I'm thinking it will be cross gen. By then it should be pretty close to new console time so cross gen should make sense. Plus it would be a fancy looking game for the new console and it would be a great swan song for Wii U.

This is assuming that NX is actually a console though.
