Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: Development Of Smart Device Games Will Be Done Primarily By Nintendo

You know what, Miyamoto in 5 years will solely be on mobile. Its kind of his way of retiring without retiring.

DeNa's relationship with Nintendo is the common role they have with almost every game they handle. Game is developed and then handed to DeNa for maintenance and updates.

So DeNA doesn't actually make games?

No. They act as publishers and providers for a lot of developers under the "Mobage" label.

Rage of Bahamut and Blood Brothers are good examples. Fantasica is a good example as it was developed by Silicon Studio (Bravely Default), but the game has been managed by Mobage for over 2 years now.

Well the image they showed at the presentation implied cross platform playability.

Suggests to me they're looking to maximise accessibility of some of their software (hence PC as well). Then hope that fans of that software, will naturally also want to migrate to dedicated Nintendo hardware. This also fits in with Iwata's comments in recent months.

If that software is still coming to Nintendo consoles, it's not "spreading resources" away from that platform. Infact, if anything, they're coming to a point of unifying meaning their resources will be more concentrated than before. The cross platform compatability of modern game engines means cross platform effort is a lot more minimal now than it ever has been.

Some of Nintendo's IP is ideally suited to this sort of cross platform set up and I think it's a welcome direction actually.

That image shows the devices that will use Nintendo's new account system.

Well, if they don't put their mobile content (especially if it's the micro transaction F2P stuff) on their dedicated systems too. Then that would just beggar belief.

I'm still going to suggest it implies that they are looking at cross format. If it doesn't fair enough, but we have limited information, and I'm pretty sure they haven't confirmed that they won't be doing this. If they have, I apologise.

Megaton. But its expected. Nintendo wants to be in control whatever is produced using their IPs.

After Cdi Zelda can you blame them?

Well its not like Nintendo hasn't outsourced their ip to other developers other than that. Capcom developed Zelda titles for Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance, Sega developed F-Zero on Gamecube, Namco developed Star Fox on Gamecube and Heavily assisted on the most recent Smash Bros, Koei-Tecmo was able to make two crossover games based on Nintendo ip, Pokemon Conquest & Hyrule Warriors so Nintendo does have a pretty good history of lending out their ip.

I just think that Nintendo wants to lay the groundwork on the direction they want their games to take for mobile. Once they have built a foundation and created a successful formula for mobile games then they will feel more comfortable letting other developers work on their games.

I honestly expected this to be the case!

If I'm not mistaken everything you listed is post CDi.  I could be wrong but it seemed like with Phillips it was a hands off licensing deal,  Since then I think they have kept a closer eye on their IP when in the hands of others.

So i don't have to buy ninty consoles to play their games? I hope they make a pokemon game 4 smart phones

I don't think the issue is so much about resources as it is one of focus.

What happens if mobile becomes 40% of Nintendo's revenue? 50%? 60%?

It's quite possible NX may continue the decline on Nintendo hardware, dedicated handhelds are declining and Nintendo's show they can't sell consoles for sh*t unless they have a gimmick sales craze to tack onto it and who knows if they'll ever come up with that again.

And when mobile becomes a bigger and bigger part of their business, it will have to command more resources and focus on Nintendo's part.

That's more of where I kind of worry. I can easily see this happening too. Nintendo IP could very easily take off like wildfire on mobile, whereas the dedicated platforms could continue to be a sluggish go.

Nintendo is almost "using" the mobile space now to gain more visibility, esp. from the kids audience.   I think you can begin to worry, if the success of this venture doesn't lead to motiving those consumers toward seeking out & buying other Ninty product (HW).

IMO the simpler, mobile gaming experience is replacing the old formula (HH), while the NX will be the  graduation product.  NX will be the new NES or rebirth of their core focus.

I think you dont have to buy ninty consoles to play spin offs.

To play the real games, you have to buy.
