That's if the app takes off. These are new types of games, using existing ip.

Iwata: "The fact is, however, it is a highly competitive market and only a handful of content providers have been able to show enduring results. If Nintendo cannot make it to that handful of winners, it does not make sense for us to be engaged in the software business on smart devices." http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2015/150317/02.html

This isn't the no-brainer that everybody thinks it is. They have what it takes to get it right and boost the dedicated console division as a result, don't get me wrong, especially now they're partnered with DeNA, but whether that will work is another question.

I think it's quite reasonable for some fans to be fearful.

They already have.  Japan alone makes it worthwhile.  The Japan app market is effin huge.

I'm talking about the game app that they're about to develop with DeNA. We don't know how successful it will be. Although I hope it will be huge, and I can't see any reason why it shouldn't be, at least in Japan.

One of the factors behind this move and strategy to use mobile gaming to encourage a new audience towards dedicated console gaming was that Nintendo's handheld sales recently broke records in Japan despite the success of the mobile market there, proving that handheld gaming and smartphone gaming can co-exist happily.

There is a lot of misunderstanding going on. And even more drawing to conclusions.

Exactly that but mainly blame it on the bad gaming journalism! :P

Did you know that on that movie, wreck it half, nintendo actually send someone to say how bowser was supposed to llok when drinking tea?

Hyrule warrior was a third party licensed game, anouma and even a man as busy as myamoto still worked on it, bayonetta 2 was under supervision of menber of SPD, just like devils third is too.

Do you guys know nintendo? Do you know how much control they demand to have in everything that has theirs names? Do you think that they will just let them have the ip and give them some money, without actually looking on what they are making? Don't you think that thoose same people could actually be working with another companies to amke more games for the consoles? do you think that they will send some random young guys to tell how thing must be done, or they will send someone that they really trhust after years on a senior posistion?

The first games will make a lot of sucess, and them what? They will not need more money to make a beter games?

Read this: http://www.wired.com/2015/03/nintendo-mobile-analysis/

Of course, there a lot of if, but in the same way that amiibo have close to no impact on selling more wiiu's and 3DS, nor do i believe that will help the main line console of nintendo at all,  unless nintendo do a really good of marketing using those games, but nintendo does good marketing?

They will have sign off control no doubt.  But this will mark a change for them imo.  They will loosen the reigns and makes shit tons of cash from it.

The very fact they are allowing this at all tells me things are changing.

It's precisely the loosening of reigns that I can see fans perceiving as worrisome; because it means there's a chance of the quality to slip, which leads to the  devaluing of ip, etc.

But I didn't read anything anywhere in the conference that they were going to take a more hands-off approach, unless you can point to it? I read that they had put together a joint development team comprised of Nintendo and DeNA members.

Edit: In fact, Iwata has gone on record as saying that these games will be developed primarily by Nintendo staff. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=7155211

I'll have to admit the day I see

NEW F-Zero Announced! .... For iOS/Android Only

Is the day a little part of me dies, haha. Insert Kid Icarus/Mario Kart/etc. any other major Nintendo IP in there I guess.

I'll know how Square-Enix fans feel when they hear stuff like "New Secret of Mana RPG! for Mobile :P"

Oh wow that's crazy!

Oh and obligatory photo editing:

lol. brilliant.

It's unfathoming, from 14 to 23.55 in less than a day...Just with an announcement, imagine if that venture will be ultra succesive(it will probably be)!How things can change if you do(at least partially)what market analysts ask for...

Can it go to 28,i.e 100% boost and pass sony?:P:P:P:P

Iwata made a very artful move and investors must have went crazy for this spectacular soaring of the stock!

It won't pass Sony just by going to 28. Nintendo currently has a market cap of 16 billion, Sony has a market cap of 30 billion. It'll need to get up to like 44 for NTDOY for Nintendo to become bigger than Sony.

That or they're upset because they don't have money to spend on stocks.

Why I think its a bad move:

1) They will have to sell their games for a lower price if they want people to buy it

2) Despite the price, most players will still be running pirated copies... Something which they cant sue someone for (like they could the R4 people if it were on their own handheld)

3) If those games dont turn out good its obviously a problem. If they do turn out good, its an even bigger problem for their handheld console, and possibly even their home console considering nintendo games are "not about graphics"... people would just get the cheaper/pirated phone versions instead.

edit: and I think nintendo stock will drop below to what it was before this announcement once they release the first few games on mobile.
