Is it that with freedom to create a character you didn't like their direction or that because the characters are voiced and generally we are meant to be playing a good person, we are limited in our choices? (the latter is my view)

In DA:O we could basically create a human hating elf who murders people for fun. in DA:I the Inquisitor was a blank slate personality.

For me Vaan, blah blah sky pirate bullcrap, rest of the main cast were good though.

As expected the usual Tidus hate :p he's an awesome protagonist. I honestly never understood the hate. Bad main protagonists... My choice is also FF related though. Vaan from FF12. He was a slapped on character who becomes the side character in his own game, which is a sign of a very weak protagonist to me.
