Forums - Gaming - NPD Just Died On GAF

Well. I suppose we will still get shipment numbers. Sort of.

Long live Nintendo and their respones to NPD! The only of the big 3 that always has something to say each month.

OT: I'm pretty sure the ones that want to be secretive are the publishers and not the NPD group. Although, by how expensive I've heard it is, NPD gladly enjoys what they do.

And VGC hasn't been very far off lately.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Does ioi have access to NPD? You'd assume so, right?

Regardless, it just made VGCs numbers a whole lot more important. You ain't getting any numbers so take these ones and like them!

I think ioi has access but he wont share for the same reason. If he shares then he will be a bigger target. Because everyone knows him and this site.

He doesn't need to share. As long as he has access to them the post NPD adjustments will still be made, so nothing really changes.

I really doubt ioi has access to the npd numbers unless he has somebody leaking them to him.  VGChartz is one of the bigger reasons the npd has become as secretive as they are.  Also, ioi has had some public spats with them in the past... Lets just say the likelihood of them allowing him to even pay for the information is very small...

I find it both surprising and curious that data tracking in the US is apparently both so limited in demand that the NPD is the only reliable source of information, yet so valuable that NPD gets away with charging what I'm told is an arm and a leg for its data. I would figure the latter would draw at least one competitor, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

Exclusivity contracts with major retailers or something like it would be my guess.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Evilore likes to think GAF is, as he calls it, "the gaming industries guiltiest pleasure". So then surely they'll have others more than willing to help stir the pot. He also claims people have offered him millions for the site. Surely with offers like that, it brings in enough revenue to get NPD data.

Seems fair. The first time they were doing something dodgy and got banned, now they've been leaking information

Not your job to decide what's fair or not. You're giving away somebody else's information without their permission, you should be punished for that. Simple

I like people who contributed to the committee.. thumbs up for that..

But i sounds like the world will stop spinning.. relax.. we will get by :)

Funny thing is..

in few years most game sale will be digital.. and then.. NPD will be no more.. (digital we salut you)

Honestly, she should have been fired if they really found out.

She either is REALLY good at what she does at JP Morgan or the story is bullshit.

Its a bummer, but it was bound to happen. Its how NPD makes money right?

But now this lets me make wild claims that Wii U is a huge success in America, so there's that.

The fact that NPD hasn't changed with the times just shows how they shouldn't be the only ones tracking these sales. A smart tracker would put this info on website, throw up a few banner ads, and watch as the ad revenue pours in every month from gaming enthusiasts. You could also throw up a short vid of the numbers on Youtube and watch the ad revenue come in there.

Really, they just went in reverse. As info got spread more readily through the internet, the more they went silent on the numbers. And for why there aren't any competitors to NPD. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some of their government buddies put some regulations in place to make it very difficult to start up a large sales tracking service.
