Forums - Gaming - NPD Just Died On GAF

Damn, now we won't have more numbers?
Well, the man/woman did the right thing, his/her job and personal life has to be the thing to value the most.

I hope someone else can do it, but what I think will happen now is a lot of false info going over by trolls.

She did say there was a super-secret base where she would try to continue posting leaks, which means the infor may eventually filter over to here.

We'll still know the number home 1 console for each month, and many times we'll have an idea of the gap (A console won the month with X% of home console sales...). We should also know whenever 3DS wins a month,  because in such months there will be a "3DS won NPD" PR, and also a XYZ console was the highest selling home console PR.

I think ioi probably does pay for NPD data. If not it would be irresponsible of a site trying to maintain a reputation for long term data integrity. We should be able to rely in a very high degree of long term accuracy for USA and Japan hardware, leaving only Eu and RoW as the parts of the world that are largely guestimates, backed up by a small amount of data with a high margin for error.

I wish I ran a US-based gaming magazine. I would spit in the eye of NPD and offer free advertising space to all major gaming hardware retailers if they gave me nation-wide sales data on a monthly basis, including estimated national market share so that I could then publish an aggregate hardware estimate that is close to being as accurate as NPD's, and also a top 50 game sales ranking.

Only positive from this is our own site vgchartz is gonna be taken more seriously now.

Does this means that the Xbox is going to be on top every week on the US?

USA should have let these banks fail.  25 billion given to a shit bank (JP Morgan and Chase) to reward their mistakes.  Instead of using that money to give loans they just acquired more shitty banks.

As for NPD... I don't care about them.   Pachter might as well lead NPD.  Sorry about my rant but now that I know JPMorgan Chase runs NPD it makes me not care about NPD numbers at all.

We're at a point that we have daily numbers for the film industry in great sites like BoxOfficeMojo, and weekly numbers for Japanese gaming sales from Famitsu and Media Create. Heck, we even have weekly listings of many European markets (while not providing exact numbers, they are invaluable nonetheless). It's sad to see the North American numbers being taken hostage like this, forcing folks to pay large sums of money to get information like that.

We're at a time where VGChartz has the opportunity to become more and more relevant in this market, and I hope that ioi sees this opportunity and takes it.

I'm gonna chime in on this, VGChartz could explode in traffic if ioi now makes a big effort to get more data points from more retailers to increase tracking accuracy. So please ioi, take this opportunity to both strengthen and rebuild this site's reputation as a sales tracker, and remove NPD's monopoly on US sales numbers. Heck, it would benefit ioi financially to do this because the traffic would increase, meaning more ad money. This would be the perfect finish to the undergoing VGC reform lead by trucks. If ioi does his job and gets a better ad-provider (let's be honest, the current one sucks) I will gladly disable adblock for VGC, and I bet others would do the same, and if he increases the accuracy of his tracking, a lot more people would visit this site I bet.

The fact that NPD hasn't changed with the times just shows how they shouldn't be the only ones tracking these sales. A smart tracker would put this info on website, throw up a few banner ads, and watch as the ad revenue pours in every month from gaming enthusiasts. You could also throw up a short vid of the numbers on Youtube and watch the ad revenue come in there.

Really, they just went in reverse. As info got spread more readily through the internet, the more they went silent on the numbers. And for why there aren't any competitors to NPD. I wouldn't be surprised if they had some of their government buddies put some regulations in place to make it very difficult to start up a large sales tracking service.

we aren't that sites target market. Huge firms pay them large amounts of money for that info. They would be cutting their revenue in half if they went the vgc way. even ioi tried for a vgc pro feature
