Forums - Gaming - NPD Just Died On GAF

Shame. Especially to see a company like NPD having such a monopoly on the market like this.

And NPD threads are always fun.

What about Creamsugar? Is he still around?

I think ioi have a seat at NPD and want to block us from getting accurate numbers so he can make us totally dependent on his number so he can charge for them.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

This is actually good news for vgc. It will be the only number source online.

Does ioi have access to NPD? You'd assume so, right?

Regardless, it just made VGCs numbers a whole lot more important. You ain't getting any numbers so take these ones and like them!

He probably has access to some data but he has other sources too like various contacts to retailers, i guess he edits it mixing in various information together. Thats why you cant claim his work as piracy or something.

I find it both surprising and curious that data tracking in the US is apparently both so limited in demand that the NPD is the only reliable source of information, yet so valuable that NPD gets away with charging what I'm told is an arm and a leg for its data. I would figure the latter would draw at least one competitor, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

Exclusivity contracts with major retailers or something like it would be my guess.

Hadn't thought of that. I wonder if that would constitute a violation of anti-trust laws, if they gobble up too many retailers in such exclusivity deals?

Evilore likes to think GAF is, as he calls it, "the gaming industries guiltiest pleasure". So then surely they'll have others more than willing to help stir the pot. He also claims people have offered him millions for the site. Surely with offers like that, it brings in enough revenue to get NPD data.

He's been offered about 8 million but he will be offered much more as the years go by. However he doesn't want to sell out for now and has chosen to only have minimally intrusive adverts.  He makes about 10k a month which probably ain't enough to pay the really high NPD fees demand per month.

Good riddance. They were just seeking attention each month with their number teasing.

Now we can't mock users that say VGC is accurate, or worse those that say there isn't any objective evidence to prove NPD is more accurate than VGC.

yeah it was really over for me when they stopped releasing numbers a few yrs ago solving riddles and waiting hrs for some video game sales numbers was getting old even with the leaks, we got less and less info on SW numbers aswell

it sucks b/c i doubt that vgc has npd data so now they have to rely on shipped and sold numbers that we get occasionally which means that we will have to wait longer to get accurate up to date numbers

but maybe now we will get weekly numbers quicker on here i had a feeling vgc would wait for npd to release prior to giving us the numbers to the last few weeks of that month so that it would be less work to adjust the numbers
