1.) are those at 100% or are those the very first chance you get to play the game while the rest of the game is installing? Cause i did that once for alien iolation when it reached 20% and teh game jammed after that. Why would want to play for 2 mins before you have to wait for the next section to load. you will end finishing teh section it loads faster then it can download.
2.) I hope you know that the hard drie that you have to swap with ps4 are not he standard ,5inch size which pc builders use . They use th 2.5 inch ones which are more costly and in some countries like nz, the biggest size is 1tb and for the price you pay for that i can get 3tb external hdd which XO uses. If ps4 uses the 3.5 inch size which pc builders use then i would be very happy as those are super cheap and they are as cheap as external hdd especially in nz. Plus when you do switch your hard drive, you won't be getting all of the 1tb. Thats because as soon as you want to play your old game , you would be reinstallign it eating up that hard drive space , unless you enjoy swapping it back and forward. I dont notice any latency at all. Nope it doesn't cause any extra heat. My external HDD for the XO is far away from the console. The heat from it is not even close to warm. i m using seagate and its quite cool and quiet. Ps4 gets hotter then the external HDD. Its not the wait time. its the inconveniance after coming from hard days work to sit down and havign to decide which i should delte or not and whether i have space or not. Its unnecessary if sony provider options for the gamers. What happens when you have hundreds of games and one day you want to play an old one . People do get an itch. Having to do that just for that game would frustate anyone
3.) I actually install all my games that i have. But with ps4 i haven't been able to do it due to lack of spce. But with XO i have all of them installed. I already used up 20% of my 3tb plus the 512gb that came with the console. So you can imagine how many games i have. I don't like spending until i platinum cause some achievements are jsut itme waster where i rather spend time playing better new games. For example AC unity, after i finish the damn game, there are co op misison taht would be fun to play on and off. If you are stuck in the ps4 situation, having to delete it just to play those mission from tiem to time , would be of greatest inconveniance. Again if you have 100 of gmaes, you wouldnt know how big teh game fiels are , for all the games.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-xbox-one-external-hard-drive-upgrade-guide. the only difference is loading times and i rather have 3tb then an ssd to shave off few seconds and pay more money for it.

1.) According to the Kotaku article, XBO lets you start games even when they don't have all the the single player content available. While the PS4 version seems to have all single player content available as soon as you're able to start the game. http://kotaku.com/installing-xbox-one-games-takes-way-too-long-1471191836
| "However, it seems that Xbox One lets you launch a game even before some singleplayer content is ready. I tested this with Madden 25 on Xbox One. Once the game was "ready to start" most modes like Connected Franchise or Practice were locked off until the game was completely installed. However, after installing the same game on PS4, those modes were playable after the initial install, which took 38 seconds." |
Perhaps you were playing the XBO version, and that caused the crash? Or maybe it was an isolated case. Because the article mentions nothing about any of the games freezing during their tests. So it doesn't seem like that's common.
Another thing to note about the install times, the XBO installs all required an installation of an update patch before the game would even begin installing, while the PS4 versions had the updates running in the background and began the install immediately.
2.) Yeah, those are the laptop harddrives. I don't know about some countries (in Brazil for example, PS4 costs like 700 dollars), but in Australia, Europe and US, in general laptop hardrives still appear faster and cheaper than external drives. Because with external drives there are two different classes, which also affect their price range. USB driven, and power cable driven. The USB driven ones generally only run at 5400rpm, while power cable driven external drives run at 7200rpm. While USB driven drives tend to be cheaper than 2.5 internal drives, power cable supported drives are more expensive than 2.5 internal drives.
Here are 2.5 internal 1TB vs 3.5 external power cable driven 1TB in EU:

A noticable difference there. If you want to go with the slower USB driven external drives however, you'd end up with an external drive running at 5400rpm, making those installs even longer than they need to be. Though yeah, you wouldn't get the whole 1TB when switching an internal due to having to backup the data you originally had. On the other hand, your original PS4 harddrive can be sold, and/or used in a laptop instead, so it's not like its value vanishes if you take it out.
And of course the heat from a console is much hotter than what an external drive generates. That was part of my point. Since external drives rarely have internal cooling, or even vents, its not wise to put them on something warm like a console. Though some external drives can get warmer than yours, from the sound of it. I use a Western Digital external, and it can get warm. Not scorchingly hot, but noticably warm. As for the inconvenience of deciding what games to delete after you come home, like I said, you can decide that on the car/train ride home from work/school, or while you're grocery shopping, etc. The option to use an external drive may very well appear for PS4 down the line, but talking about having more options, when it comes to the subject of installing games, PS4 seems to offer more options, since letting you play games within a minute after beginning the installation and letting you switch the internal drive are also options suited for many people, even if they may not be the ones you prioritize. I would go with internal over external even if I had that extra choice, due to the reasons I stated. So if I had to chose between being able to switch the internal but no external support, vs not being able to switch the internal but allowing external, I prefer the former. But for those who prefer external drives, hopefully that option will be added soon.
3.) I see. But if you like to install all your games, does that mean you did that during the previous generation as well? Did you switch the internal drives then? Or did you manage installing everything with the drives they came with? Assuming you switched the drives on your 360/PS3, if having all the games installed is important to you, why don't you just switch the internal drive of the PS4? Is it because you live in NZ and the biggest size is 1TB? That's pretty strange. I looked it up on pricespy, and I did get one hit on a 2TB drive at least. http://www.elive.co.nz/western-digital-green-wd20npvt-hdd.php?ref=pricespy But they seem quite rare in NZ. I was expecting you to have a similar market to Australia.
