Hiku 's post above just proves my point.  It takes minutes and you can start playing almost straight away.  Your complaint is really not that big. Enough of the whole sony never learn from their mistakes because they clearly built a system with a super slick instalation method. Xboxs take way longer so I know which I'd rather have.

the times he psoted doesn't say whether its point when you can first play it , which is 20% or is ti when it reaches 100% or even 50%.   Its very vague and doesn't sya the parameters for these test. You can't use results and claim it based on the arguement used at the moment. I know TLOU took awhile , muchb more then 40 seconds to reach 100% , same with GTA V onps4.

Dane every game I've played installs in 2 mins.  Well you can play after 2 mins and the rest installs as you play.  Even if this took 10 minutes your complaint is utterly invalid.  Seriously you are giving out for the sake of it.  When your HDD fills up deleting and installing a new game will delay you 2 mins.  Again you have no point.  Stop complaining.

how do you do that?

google. but yeah, its a 2.5" drive every laptop needs those. you won't get them where you live?

I do but max is 1tb which cost as much as 3tb external , therefore i am reluctant to get one.

1.) are those at 100% or are those the very first chance you get to play the game while the rest of the game is installing? Cause i did that once for alien iolation when it reached 20% and teh game jammed after that. Why would want to play for 2 mins before you  have to wait for the next section to load. you will end finishing teh section it loads faster then it can download.

2.) I hope you know that the hard drie that you have to swap with ps4 are not he standard ,5inch size which pc builders use . They use th 2.5 inch ones which are more costly and in some countries like nz, the biggest size is 1tb and for the price you pay for that i can get 3tb external hdd which XO uses. If ps4 uses the 3.5 inch size which pc builders use then i would be very happy as those are super cheap and they are as cheap as external hdd especially in nz.  Plus when you do switch your hard drive, you won't be getting all of the 1tb. Thats because as soon as you want to play your old game , you would be reinstallign it eating up that hard drive space ,  unless you enjoy swapping it back and forward.  I dont notice any latency at all. Nope it doesn't cause any extra heat. My external HDD for the XO is far away from the console. The heat from it is not even close to warm. i m using seagate and its quite cool and quiet. Ps4 gets hotter then the external HDD.  Its not the wait time. its the inconveniance after coming from hard days work to sit down and havign to decide which i should delte or not and  whether i have space or not. Its unnecessary if sony provider options for the gamers.  What happens when you have hundreds of games and one day you want to play an old one . People do get an itch. Having to do that just for that game would frustate anyone

3.) I actually install all my games that  i have. But  with ps4 i haven't been able to do it due to lack of spce. But with XO i have all of them installed. I already used up 20% of my 3tb plus the 512gb that came with the console. So you can imagine how many games i have. I don't like spending until i platinum cause some achievements are jsut itme waster where i rather spend time playing better new games. For example AC unity, after i finish the damn game, there are co op misison taht would be fun to play on and off. If you are stuck in the ps4 situation, having to delete it just to play those mission from tiem to time , would be of greatest inconveniance.   Again if you have 100 of gmaes, you wouldnt know  how big teh game fiels are , for all the games.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-xbox-one-external-hard-drive-upgrade-guide. the only difference is loading times and i rather have 3tb then an ssd to shave off few seconds and pay more money for it.

1.) According to the Kotaku article, XBO lets you start games even when they don't have all the the single player content available. While the PS4 version seems to have all single player content available as soon as you're able to start the game. http://kotaku.com/installing-xbox-one-games-takes-way-too-long-1471191836

"However, it seems that Xbox One lets you launch a game even before some singleplayer content is ready. I tested this with Madden 25 on Xbox One. Once the game was "ready to start" most modes like Connected Franchise or Practice were locked off until the game was completely installed. However, after installing the same game on PS4, those modes were playable after the initial install, which took 38 seconds."

Perhaps you were playing the XBO version, and that caused the crash? Or maybe it was an isolated case. Because the article mentions nothing about any of the games freezing during their tests. So it doesn't seem like that's common.

Another thing to note about the install times, the XBO installs all required an installation of an update patch before the game would even begin installing, while the PS4 versions had the updates running in the background and began the install immediately.

2.) Yeah, those are the laptop harddrives. I don't know about some countries (in Brazil for example, PS4 costs like 700 dollars), but in Australia, Europe and US, in general laptop hardrives still appear faster and cheaper than external drives. Because with external drives there are two different classes, which also affect their price range. USB driven, and power cable driven. The USB driven ones generally only run at 5400rpm, while power cable driven external drives run at 7200rpm. While USB driven drives tend to be cheaper than 2.5 internal drives, power cable supported drives are more expensive than 2.5 internal drives.

Here are 2.5 internal 1TB vs 3.5 external power cable driven 1TB in EU:

A noticable difference there.
If you want to go with the slower USB driven external drives however, you'd end up with an external drive running at 5400rpm, making those installs even longer than they need to be.
Though yeah, you wouldn't get the whole 1TB when switching an internal due to having to backup the data you originally had. On the other hand, your original PS4 harddrive can be sold, and/or used in a laptop instead, so it's not like its value vanishes if you take it out.

And of course the heat from a console is much hotter than what an external drive generates. That was part of my point. Since external drives rarely have internal cooling, or even vents, its not wise to put them on something warm like a console. Though some external drives can get warmer than yours, from the sound of it. I use a Western Digital external, and it can get warm. Not scorchingly hot, but noticably warm.
As for the inconvenience of deciding what games to delete after you come home, like I said, you can decide that on the car/train ride home from work/school, or while you're grocery shopping, etc.
The option to use an external drive may very well appear for PS4 down the line, but talking about having more options, when it comes to the subject of installing games, PS4 seems to offer more options, since letting you play games within a minute after beginning the installation and letting you switch the internal drive are also options suited for many people, even if they may not be the ones you prioritize. I would go with internal over external even if I had that extra choice, due to the reasons I stated. So if I had to chose between being able to switch the internal but no external support, vs not being able to switch the internal but allowing external, I prefer the former. But for those who prefer external drives, hopefully that option will be added soon.

3.) I see. But if you like to install all your games, does that mean you did that during the previous generation as well? Did you switch the internal drives then? Or did you manage installing everything with the drives they came with? Assuming you switched the drives on your 360/PS3, if having all the games installed is important to you, why don't you just switch the internal drive of the PS4? Is it because you live in NZ and the biggest size is 1TB?
That's pretty strange. I looked it up on pricespy, and I did get one hit on a 2TB drive at least. http://www.elive.co.nz/western-digital-green-wd20npvt-hdd.php?ref=pricespy
But they seem quite rare in NZ. I was expecting you to have a similar market to Australia.

1) That was alien isolation on XO . it was at 20% , then i was able to play. I passed the intor part which was faster then the game could install. Same with some games on ps4. My point was, whats the point of playing when its only 20% then , having to wait till the rest installs as by the time you explore the 20% it has downlaoded, the rest wouldnt hvae been downloaded yet.  After alien isolation incident, i wait till  the game is entirely installed first.

2) The external ones i got for my XO and WIIU are 7200rpm and are usb3.0. I would never get the slower one lol.  Having the ability to play staraightawya is pointless as you complete that section faster  than it can install , and by then you have pause and wait. By wait means you have to restart the game again. Would really be thinking of what to delete while comuting back home form work especially when you had a tiring day? I doubt many peopel actually do that lol.

3) When xbox 360 came out, i was a university student lol. Therefore i could only get one . I didnt get the Wii and ps3 till  the last 2 years of its cycle. By then you have the 320gb  model version which wa splentiful as the games then were not very big, compared to what they ar enow. As result i never had to swap the hard drive for it. With Xbox 360 i  didn't run of out space as well. Beign a student back then meant i couldnt buy alot of games hence why i never had a problem lol.

I when to pricespay and saw the one you are looking at. you can only buy it from an unknown store. neevr heard of them. HOwever it cost $264dollars not including shipping.  With that i can easily buy a 4tb external from pb tech and buy a game or gaems ( if you buy from steam) for less then that price. Plus i would never buy from a shop that i never heard from.  That was the only one and it was sold out. Nope the market is small here. The biggest competitor is pbtech , but they do not sell that. If it did , i would ask my friend who works there, as she always gives her managers discount wiht whatevr i purchase from her store.

you are lucky if you  can do that. i always finish the section that th econsole ahs downoaded faster then it can install.  As result i wait till it fully install. I knwo TLOU takes much longer then 10 mins and games down the track will be  as big in  size as tlou or even more. Alot of people who work late , who had hard day from work and even worse, who have family with kids. Once that happens, every minute or every second of free time counts. For you 10 mins is nothing, but for person who is married with kids , 10 mins is a lifetime and soemthing he can't get back lol.

Dane you are obviously playing an open world game. The fact is install times are very fast. The times are all on Google. The issue you have is not a big one. A few mins wait to play a game is fine. On the ps3 you often had to do an hours install.

1.) Did you manage to freeze a PS4 game that way? If so, which game was it? The reason I'm asking is because PS4 appears to install games quicker than XBO. Just how much quicker I'm not sure, so I tried to look it up, and found an article that said NBA2K14 took 36 minutes to fully install on PS4, while it took 46 minutes to fully install on XBO. So perhaps that is the install ratio difference. I'm not sure.
As I was searching, I came across some comments about the abiliity to play games as they're installing on PS4:

"I don't even know. Once that first minute passes by, it's a non-issue.
I never even noticed my PS4's disc drive working for more than a few minutes."

"I installed The Last of Us (44gb) in less than 2 minutes."

"I have no idea how long a full game install takes. But generally speaking I can start playing 1 min after I insert the disc."

"It's somewhat of a non-issue.
I put the disc in and by the time I'm done looking at stuff or settling in, the game is ready to play even while still installing. It installs insanely fast...
I really do love the "play as you download/install" part, especially for Injustice: Gods Among Us and Battlefield 4."

Just a portion of the comments, but I still haven't seen anyone mention runnuing into this freezing issue that you did.
Right now I'm inclined to think it's not common at all.

Though even so, don't you think developers would start to learn to tailor their games after this system to allow players to start playing their games even earlier and more efficient? Thinking about it, it seems a bit odd that the game would freeze though, because all the information is on the disc. So if you encountered some information that hadn't been installed, you'd expect it could read that information from the disc instead momentarily. That is, if it's capable of switching from installing to reading like that. It seems like it would be possible. In that case you should experience a slowdown, but not a full crash.

But either way, I think PS4 and XBO should be capable of judging when it is ok for you to start playing, without catching up or passing the installation, right? After all, the time the games allow you to start playing them vary from game to game, likely for that specific reason.

2.) Oh? Which drives are those? I was looking for drives like that, but always encountered slower ones when they're powered through USB only. And after asking, people told me that's generally the case.
As for thinking about what to delete before getting home, sure, why not? It's not like it's a complicated or tiering thought process. Plus reminding yourself of the fact that you'll be able to start playing a new game can be invigorating/motivating after a long day. hough not every day is a long and tiering day. And you can do it during your lunch break. (Or my favorite, during work. ;)) Because we're all able to find out when the games we are interested in are going to be released. So you can have a lot of days and opportunities to decide on it. Can even think about it while you're shutting off your console, or when you go to the bathroom/shower, etc. It should be no problem.

3.) Ah, I see. Yeah 320 GB seems plentiful for last gen. I have a 120 GB PS3, and I feel it's roughly the equivalent to, or similar to, a 500 GB PS4. So I'm expecting to get by with it the same way I did with my PS3. That's why I'd appreciate the play-while-installing option, in case I do go back to play an old game I uninstalled. But I'm hoping the upcoming PS4 Slim will have a 1TB harddrive, in which case it'll probably be perfect for me.
I might wait that long to get a PS4, unless Persona 5 convinces me otherwise.

As for the site with the 2TB drive, it's actually free shipping, so it's not quite that bad. However, it seems to still be around $60 more than you'd expect, since the cheapest 1TB versions tend to go for around $100 with shipping when I looked at the list. As for the site itself, I wouldn't know about that. lol

1) and 2)  i only had that experience once with infamous.  Getting to play while its loading its not long for any consoles. its  bit faster for ps4 , but when i play , the section thats loaded will be completed faster then the console laoding up the next section. From my experience with alien isolation , if you do that, the remaining textures that has been isntalled won't be added to the game that you are playing. You have to restart it from the start for it work .  After alien isolation issue, i jsut let the game fully installed before playing just to avoid that issue.

2.5) Fair enough. it depends on the person. I dont continously think about games when i am at work. I only do it when i am at home. lol i find all the release dates from here so i am well informed about then haha. When it comes to new release , i jsut check with my friend who runs the game deprtment and ask hi to kepe a copy and 90% of the time , i get the game at cost price which is pretty sweet and usually its a limited edition which ends up the same price as a standard one

3) yea its was plentiful. Even right now , i just use it for psn plus games and still have over 120gb left and with psn plus you get shit loads of games. Both have that option, its just that with ps4 you can play after 5% while with  XO you have to wait till it reaches something like 20% before you can start playing.  The ones i got is http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=HDDSEA0432&name=Seagate-3TB-Expansion-Desktop-3.5-USB-3.0-External Thats the 3tb. The place where i always get my pc stuff, they only ssell usb 3.0 hard drives and they always have specials on them to . http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=c&p=externalhdd&b=Seagate. They are the cheapest when it comes to IT stuff.

Ah okay. free shipping is good. However the price is ridiculous. I can by nintendo 3ds or if top it up by 30ish dollars i can get a new nintendo 3ds  :D. I haven't heard about them as well. I tend ot avoid places like that lol.

its fast if you play when its has only installed 5% of the game. However if you wait till the game fully install, then it takes more then 15 mins. Having to play a bit and stop  and wait itl next section loads is not worth it. Might as well wait till it fully loads.  Games like wolfensteing is well  over 40gb and its fps. Kill zone is over 30gb and so is Need for speed one. These games do take awhile.

I still have a 500gb PS4 but almost all my games are disc based. I did the upgrade thing with BF4 so it is digital... And ya 64gb is stupid big. If I decide I want to play it again I better start the download the day before. Besides that my only digital games are Destiny(like 25gbs), Madded and FIFA (both around 20gb) so it's no big deal.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Rumours of external hdd support on the way
