Forums - General - Why is soccer so unpopular in the US?

Oh, and I forgot to mention. The reason Americans don't like Soccer/Football very much is because we have better and more entertaining sports to choose from. Unlike most of the world, we have variety. In Canada, Hockey is popular and gives soccer a run for its money. In Japan, baseball is fairly popular and the best baseball players are considered national heroes (despite soccer being popular as well). Americans have a variety of popular sports to choose from and soccer happens to lose out. It doesn't help that there aren't very many well known American players and possibly only one good team (D.C. United being the only decent one I know).

What are the popular sports in Europe? Football....and more freakin' football (yes, I called it football)! Maybe the occasional golf game in the UK, but not much besides that. So should Americans be criticized because we don't like Soccer, or should the rest of the world be criticized for not taking chances and discovering what they really like?

Besides, the reason Football (our football) is so popular here is because it's already popular. You may have the minority of people who obsessively watch the game and hold fantasy leagues, but most people watch football and the Superbowl because everyone else is doing it (hell, I once bought Madden 2005 just because all my friends were buying it).

So don't insult Americans for not liking Soccer. We're not forced to like it, and we're allowed to have our individuality. Ticket sales are going up incredibly fast anyways with the influx of immigrants from Latin America (it's nigh impossible to get tickets to a D.C. United game now, I tried). There are plenty of ways to insult every country and every sport, and while I could easily make jabs against the great Canada, I'm not going to. I'm just better than that.

I'm not going to comment on everything else in here, since all has been said.

But this!

Yes football is the most popular sport here, but saying that it's the only sport people watch and play is just plain ignorant.
Road bicycle racing, handball, rugby, formula 1, skiïng (and other winter sports) are huge in Sweden/Norway/..., Tennis, etc.

Yes football takes the crown, but there is plenty of room for other sports.

It is not soccer, it is football.

Use the correct name please. What Americans play is not football, because the game does not primarily involve the feet.

Americans must like boring sports, because no sport compares to football. Ah well, their loss.

That's funny because when I searched for the word "soccer" it comes out just fine for me, in both the Webster's Dict. ( http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/soccer ) and also the Oxford Dict. ( http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/soccer?view=uk )

OT: Soccer can be so boring to watch. I generally put it in the same category as Baseball; fun to play, but very boring to watch. Football and Basketball on the otherhand are sports I love to play and watch.

Americans don't play rugby either do they.

I guess it's cuz they are so soft and a bit limp wristed, which is why they wear a suit of armour to play American football compared to rugby players.

You've gotta be kidding me. Tell me you're not that ignorant.

An NFL career takes 10 years off the life span of the player on average. 10 years! Most players have debilitating injuries throughout the remainder of their lives.I'm sure professional rugby is jus as tough, but it's very ignorant for you to go into this spouting shit you know nothing about. Find some info on the average lifespan of a professional rugby player. Let's see if it matches up.

Rugby isn't as tough... proffessional rugby players play way later in their careers then proffesional football players.

Anyone who plays both will tell you Football hurts more.

Rugby players play well on at an age where Football players can't even walk without feeling intense pain.

You talk about banning people yet you stir up shit like this?

Although you did compliment DC United, so maybe that makes it even...

Both "football" and "soccer" are terms derived from "association football" (the "soc" in association was used to create the word "soccer").  Both are British terms.  Both are correct.  And there are more names than that:  futbol, futebol, calcio, etc.  Now that you and some others who have posted in this thread know of the etymology, perhaps you will be able to refrain from criticizing Americans or others (Aussies?) for calling the game by a different name than you are used to.  I mean, I prefer "football" myself, but there is nothing wrong with "soccer."

I had a good feeling, but I couldn't find any articles to back my claim up and didn't want to talk out of my ass. People that don't follow the sport have no idea that pads became a necessity over time to keep the players alive. I guarantee if football players didn't wear pads like Rugby players do then there would be severe casualties every single game. Shoot, there would probably be over a dozen deaths a season.

I don't give a damn if americans hate or like soccer but, please, its not because you've better sports, that's just arrogant.

Another point, why some americans thinks that everyone outside USA is anti-american?

Sorry if have some errors, i'm still learning english.

Welcome to Vgchartz (since this is your first post).

I'm assuming this post was in response to mine. Most of my post wasn't that serious, I was just mad at a lot of the people who had posted in this thread and wanted to rile them up. Soccer is actually my favorite sport by far (yeah, I called it soccer, sue me) and the only one I bother watching. And nobody thinks everyone outside the U.S. hates Americans. But some of the comments in this thread were from people who clearly fit that description, and I don't appreciate it.
