Both "football" and "soccer" are terms derived from "association football" (the "soc" in association was used to create the word "soccer"). Both are British terms. Both are correct. And there are more names than that: futbol, futebol, calcio, etc. Now that you and some others who have posted in this thread know of the etymology, perhaps you will be able to refrain from criticizing Americans or others (Aussies?) for calling the game by a different name than you are used to. I mean, I prefer "football" myself, but there is nothing wrong with "soccer."
