Which is why I have my doubts about the longevity of the 8th gen.

If I didn't know that ps4 has already sold over 20.2m I'd be inclined to think consoles are doomed after reading that.

That's the good thing about nintendo.  No matter how bad things get on their own platforms they always have the 3rd party fall back.  Unlike Sega their games especially on mobile would make them billions and they'd never need to worry about building or selling hardware.  I think that's why they will give next gen another go because they know if worse comes to worse they have a plan B.

I feel like SEGA could make billions if they actually leveraged their own franchises properly as a 3rd party, it's the fault of their management that they don't. Maybe the talent is long gone now and it might be too late to get it back, but they do have many awesome IP's under their belt.

But anyway, I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment regarding Nintendo. I for one wish they would go 3rd party. Software is their strong suit, not hardware... never hardware.

Tablets/phones are Nintendo's no.1 enemy at this stage I think.

It's killing their ability to get to kids and has totally destroyed all the gains they made with the Wii/DS in terms of casuals by effectively making casual gaming a free-to-play/$1 proposition.

I don't think unfortunately they really have an answer to this either. The smartphone/app industry just doesn't play by any of Nintendo's rules.

Sony/MS at least still operate basically under the same business model that Nintendo established with the Famicom/NES.

Nintendo needs to make a phone with their own OS like Apple.
They have a big enough following base to start an experiment.

They would get killed. 

Even MS can't hold their own against Apple, Nintendo would get slaughtered. 

A phone isn't a joke/fun device, it's something people use as their most important tool for their life and even business/work nowadays. 

Maybe 6-7 years ago it was a half-way reasonable gamble, but today it's far too late. 

I wouldn't be shocked honestly if at some point in the next 10 years Apple makes a play to buy Nintendo (provided the stock continues to flounder). The amount of cash reserves they have is incredible and shareholders are getting ancy and want them to spend it on something. Mario/Pokemon exclusive to iOS, Nintendo games on AppleTV/Apple Console, and on Macbooks/iPads would clean up.
