Forums - Gaming - Do you get emotionally attached to video game characters?

I'm currently watching a lets play of Xenoblade (Chuggaconroy by the way), and the guy keeps saying how he feels sorry for a certain character because she likes one character that doesn't like her back, and he says that she is a strong woman and blah blah blah...have any of you ever gotten this attached to a character? when I played Xenoblade these romance moments were the most cheesy things ever, they were one of the very few things in that game I hated...

I also remember another lets player, which I don't watch anymore, literally crying when Cid 'died' in FF IV (he was playing it for the first time)...this, in my opinion, is...stupid if I'm being completely honest.

Maybe it's my personality, but I've never been attached to any character in a video game, movie or book. I may like or dislike a character, but never to the point where I feel happy or cry when they die or something happens to them...they aren't real so it doesn't matter.

Do any of you feel the same way?

The end of FFX upset me greatly.

Very! Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, and Tearaway are the most intensely I've ever been attached to characters in any medium.

Without a doubt! I love the girls in Homemate and having virtual sex with them always gives me pleasure in a way that no other games do

I feel very attached to my waifu... And yeah it's the one on the avatar.

It depends really. It's normally animals that get me, I just know that the griffin creature in The Last Guardian is going to die, and seeing it in the trailer coupled with that music... Ah shite. It'll get me.

Zelda from Skyward Sword. It was the only time I've actually genuinely liked her character enough to focus on the story with her rather than side quests.

Losing Agro in Shadow of the Colossus was hellish as well. Fuck Wander, just make sure the horse is alright.

Not as often as I'd like, but when a game has the right mix of likable characters and good writing, sure.

Very rarely, especially with today's bland characters/story.

Some Characters I remember being attached to is Ashley Robbins (Another Code R/ Trace Memory). I was dreading finishing Another Code R cos I knew I'd never play another game with that character/world.

Also got quite attached to Kyle Hyde from Hotel Dusk. Was very glad I could enjoy one more game with that character (Last Window). Also depressed we'll never see him again.

I got attached to Tearaway too.

Not that much. I am intrigued as to why they do this or that, and I ask myself as the one controlling them why should I help every other character (also known as 100% the game), but no more than that. I do find romantic sub-plots/implications in games never done correctly 99% of the time (there's one exception), which by consequence makes me feel less interested in the characters.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.
