hmm, op might have a problem here, theyre not, the memory controller in the cpu is for ddr4 not ddr3

Ahh... okay. I also had a planned build, with mine being compatible with DDR4. I recall it was an LGA 2011 v-3? If not, I am not sure.

yeah, not sure about v2 but normal lga2011 is ddr3, the i7 3970x i have in mine is lga2011, and the board is lga2011 (rampage iv extreme), the difference between lga2011 and lga2011v3 and the ddr4 requirement for the newer 5xxx series intel cpus is throwing a lot of people into ops position with regards to accidentally buying incompatible parts.

Ive a friend in the same situation but thankfully the only part of hers that is ddr4 dependant is the cpu, so shes just switching that out for a 3xxx or 4xxx series

for op it looks like he can just return the unopened ram and get a refund, which is fortunate.

A great PC build for sure! Would that GSkill be DDR3 or DDR4?

Thanks for that. Took awhile ot get build and got alot of advice from you guys so pretty much thanks you guys for the help :). Wanted to future proof it as much as possible.I can't wait to put them together and get it running!  Its DDR3. DDR4 is expensive and games do not require them.  I got the motherboard that can support it  so in future , if required, i jsut need to buy ram and it will be cheaper by then.

Hmmm.. Interesting. I thought that DDR3 cards were incompatible with DDR4 motherboards? Can you help me with this?

The motherboard also only takes DDR4 too.

OP  - return the ram for a refund, i assume it hasnt been opened yet, and buy some DDR4, its cheaper than changing the rest of the system to DDR3

nope i just admired the packaging

Ahh... I see. Had a ThermalTake Level 10 GT at the heart of my build. Sadly, while I thought my check would come in, $3.5k was something I couldn't, and still cannot swallow.

Wither way, good news OP! You don't have to feel worried about your purchase. So long as you have your receipt, you will be good for a refund!

yep, pop it back to the supplier for a full refund then, DDR4 may be more expensive but you pretty much require it for that cpu and board, sorry for not noticing sooner in the thread, kudos to OnlyForDisplay for the catch

According to the qualified vendors list, that exact ram will work -

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA2011/X99-A/X99_Series_DRAM_QVL_20150108.pdf

its important to note that the list states up to 4 DIMM (4 modules) are supported / qualified, but this does not mean that 8 will not work, it just means thats what they tested on the bios that was available at the time, bios updates generally assist ram compatibility frequently
