I think if Xb one is 2nd (or 3rd, N3DS incoming) by an unacceptable margin (to be defined by MS, not us) 3 or 4 months in a row they will probably react before the holiday season begins. If the margins are close, then they are likely to believe that their holiday strategy, focussed around Halo 5 and Tomb Raider, will give them the win for the year (In the USA) as a whole, and that will be just fine. If a projected PS4 lead build up from Jan-Sept is around the 500K mark, or less, then MS is likely to think "we can erase that, and then some, from Oct to Dec." And they would probably be right, so might as well max the revenue over this perios. If PS4 is projected to build up a ~ 1 million lead it's unlikely Xb one could erase that, with what Sony is likely to bring in these holidays. So if they are thinking as Pachter is thinking and they want to be able to say "Xb one is number 1!...in the USA...in 2015" then they may need to do something before the official holiday push.
So what happens this month may or may not be important, depedning on the following 2 or 3 months.
