Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii U will never beat PS Vita! (real sales)

It doesn't suprise me that the US has a higher digital attachment rate than Japan. Far more games are digital only in the US (and Europe) so Japan is likely dragging the digital attachment rate down globally.

Do you think Japan's attach rate is better or worse than the US?

I was really referring to digital sales vs retail sales as a percentage rather than the actual attach rate per system. But I would say the attach rate per Vita is probably lower in Japan than the west, because the more systems you sell, the fewer games later adopters tend to buy.

However, looking at the weekly sales charts in Japan, there are frequently weeks where more hardware was sold, than software is sold for Vita in the top 50. As the software trackers only track physical sales, I think it's safe to assume that there is a lot of digital consumption now on Vita even in Japan (Minecraft sold over 100k digitally in a few weeks there on Vita and I think Terraria saw a similar success).

You've also got titles like Senran Kagura: Bon Appetit where the digital sales were so much stronger than expected that they ended up doing physical release later on.

WiiU will sell 16m at the best.

Vita could sell more or less, likely more since it will last much longer ( last handheld from Sony )

I'm not so sure about that. I think Vita in North America at least will start to get liquidated from US storeshelves anyway as 2015 goes on. It's just selling way too low, retailers are probably getting fed up with it as is.

Even in Japan, Vita is pretty much completely fuxxored when Nintendo launches the 3DS successor which will have most likely an even better chipset (so there goes the main advantage it had over the 3DS). And I think that's coming sooner than some people think.

In Japan, Vita will live an other generation, since developpers will be used to it. And i dont think the next 3DS will be more powerful, what will they choose ? The next 3DS with 0M or the Vita with an install base growing more and more ?

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Damn, that's quite high! But as pointed out by another user here, Wii U also have digital sales, albeit probably not as high a percentage as on the Vita. Couple that with all the accessories for Wii U (controllers and Amiibos) I think it's safe to asume Wii U is making more money for Nintendo than Vita for Sony. Let's not forget that most games on Vita are 3rd party games, which means less money for Sony than from a 1st party game. On the other hand, most Wii U games are 1st party games made by Nintendo, which means more money than from a 3rd party game.

And as far as I know, Nintendo are now making a profit from the Wii U HW, but I can't be sure of course. But let's not forget that Sony lost money on the Vita as well.

So all in all, by the end, I think Wii U will have been a more profitable venture for Nintendo than Vita will have been for Sony. Both are massive failures though. I canät imagine either company being happy with the consoles.

I think the big difference between Wii U and Vita with digital sales, besides the cross buy aspect etc. is that Wii U's big titles are all physical releases, whilst a lot of the Vita's software is digital exclusive.

Sony didn't lose money on Vita sales at launch though. I'm pretty sure the figures showed that they were selling units around break even (definitely break even once a memory card was bought) and they didn't do any price cuts in the first year despite the lacklustre sales so it was clear they had decided to make profit margins key through the Vita. Also the R&D was part of the PS4 development which means this will also have been lower than the Wii U's.

I appreciate that first party software brings in more money, however you also have development costs for it whilst all the 3rd party software coming out on Vita is pure royalties and physical has much higher retailer and wholesale cuts + distribution to chuck into the mix whilst digital again, they just get 30% of every sale without putting a penny in themselves.

Obviously we'll probably never actually know so this is all speculation, but I do think the Vita will end it's life having generated more profit than the Wii U :)

It's a shame that we don't know the digital sales ratio for Wii U; I figure it has to be somewhat high concidering the vitual console and things like that, but probably not as high as 48%.

They didn't? I seem to remember there being a lot of talk about that... Maybe I remember it wrong.

Yes, 1st party games cost a lot more to develop for the console manufactorer, but Nintendo makes pretty cheap games, compared to mant others out there.

I guess we just have to agree to disagree =)

nothing can outsell the vita.

Not true, the Wii U will outsell Vita but barely. Even if they are both failures, this is still true. The still have several games that are potential big hits that haven't even arrived yet. Some that haven't even been announced. With Zelda, Xenoblade, Star Fox alone, it'll pass Vita.

This reminds me of all those PS3/X360 thread wars we used to have on here a few years ago.

It's a much needed return to the good old times!

Indeed, though I'd love for Nintendo/Sony to confirm the answer one day. This really is the point some people on here really need to understand though. Neither of us know's who is right, all we can do is say our opinion. There are no facts right now to back either opinion. People just need to be more mature.

I completely agree with your sentiment; as long as Sony and Nintendo don't release official numbers all we can do is guessing. Some guesses are more educated than others, but in this particular instance either guess is just as valid I think. But on the other hand, guessing these things is why we're here for, right? =)
