Forums - Gaming - Retro Studios - could it save the Wii U?

Nintendo buying Take-Two and releasing GTA 6 exclusively on the Wii U as a 1st party game couldn't save it.

Pacther once speculated Nintendo would buy Take-Two for a purpose such as this. That's how I know it could never happen :D.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Retro Studios asked Nintendo to do a sequel, not the other way around. Besides, it's not possible anymore to churn out as many games with such a small team on the Wii U like Rare did on the N64.

Retro > Rare

A lot of people complain about Microsoft's handling of Rare (rightfully), but Nintendo is handling Retro Studios just as bad. These guys have the ability to become the next Rare if Nintendo let them. Nintendo 64 had a ton of Nintendo first party droughts, almost as bad as the Wii U. However, the N64 had a secret weapon: Rare. Anytime I mention the N64, everyone always brings up Goldeneye. Goldeneye saved the N64. The Wii U does not have this luxury. Or could it?

http://www.unseen64.net/tag/retro-studios/ Here are some of Retro's cancelled games

They were working on a WRPG game called Raven Blade. That would be cool to see Nintendo get a killer WRPG exclusive game. Also, Retro could make a kick ass FPS if they wanted to (Prime is proof of that). Could you imagine an epic first person shooter from Retro Studios? Wow. However, Nintendo instead has them working on Donkey Kong Country. Thankfully Tropical Freeze flopped.

Retro Studios could give Nintendo a lot more appeal (let's face it, WRPGs and FPS are the most popular genres these days, not 2D platformers).

What do you guys think? Should Nintendo let Retro unchained and try to become the Rare for the Wii U?

Donkey Kong Country: TF did not flop. It has currently sold over 1m worldwide on a console that has only sold almost 9.2m. That is a pretty good attach rate. It did not flop.

We need to stop with the "Can (blank) save the Wii U?" The Wii U cannot be saved. It is what it is: a niche console with some great games (i.e. Gamecube 2.0, but not really).

What does 'save the wii u' even mean anymore?

Retro > Rare

I think rare was better than retro, jet force gemini looked better than almost everything in that generation

First of all, let's not try to compare Retro to the current state of Rare, because that's just insulting the talented developers at Retro. They've not once made a terrible game, unlike Rare who has been resorted to Kinect Sports games and that one attempt at a Banjo game that wasn't a Banjo game. Even someone who doesn't like the DKC series cannot question its quality, because it's there.

Secondly, Nintendo isn't limiting Retro to anything. Retro wanted to make DKC: TF and Nintendo allowed them to do it, rather than forcing them to continue with the Prime series.

Thirdly, nothing can save the Wii U. Absolutely nothing. Yes, I do believe every bit counts and I think a nice Metroid game or new IP by Retro would help some, but it's not going to be its saving grace no matter what. The Wii U will suffer the same fate as the GameCube, and that's just fine as long as Nintendo can squeeze as much profit as they can out of it.

It has an even higher attach rate than Returns did. Donkey Kong ain't goin' nowhere.

Exactly! I don't like it when false stuff like saying DKC: TF flopped, when it clearly didn't.

It is the same with Bayonetta 2. When you consider the attatch rate, it is FAR from flopping. And also, .63m is not that bad in the first place.
