Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 shipped 1.1m units over the holiday, 360 2.1m~ 360 LTD ahead of PS3, still in 2nd Place

1.) The 360 had a 10mio units headstart when the PS3 finally launched. So, having equalized those 10mio units within a shorter period of time alone is a quite honorable success for the PS3.

2.) The 360 has definitely been shipped more than the PS3.

3.) The PS3 has a bigger installed hardware base worldwide. This it what counts in the end.

1.) But it was set to follow its predecessor which didn't happen.

2.) This is based on what?

3.) This is what we are arguing in this thread.

Where did you get PS4 started FY2014 (wrong by the way because FY is from March to March) with NO units on shelves??? I'm missing a joke here or what?

This shipment numbers are for the same period of time (or very similar) as the 18'5 mill sold, said by Sony....

And 3mill XBO on shelves is TOO MUCH in my opinion. 2 mill is more a possiblity and is still a huge number. And please, don't say FACT if you can prove MS "overshipped like crazy", because you can't.

Because it was near impossible to buy a new PS4 last January, meaning sold-through = shipped for PS4.

"Impossible to buy"????, where??......

Sorry, I won't spend more time arguing this. You are still saying things based on thin air and I'm not going to support this argument.

1. One could just as easily argue that Playstation's momentum off of PS2 and brand power in general, more than made up for the year long headstart. No one thought the PS3 wouldn't outsell the 360 at the time. It was just a matter of when it would pass it on its way to another 100+ million selling Sony console.

2. Well the theory in this thread is that the 360 has sold more than the PS3. I can't think of a way for it to be possible for the 360 to sell more than the PS3 but not ship more, unless stores are just ordering millions of PS3's to clog their shelves.

3. Based on what?

Also LOL @ whoever said PS4 began the 2014 year with 0 units on shelves and it was impossible to find one. Uh... no.

So youre going to bring up the lame 'it didnt match PS2' every time a Sony console doesnt do 150m units?

Man... this is the definition of 'victim of its own success'.

Youre right, but no-one 'at that time' expected it was going to be $599 and release a year after the 360.

It did keep its momentum despite that and was able to beat the 360 overall, and on average sales per year.

I bet if MS or Nintendo released a console more expensive than Sony in the same generation they wouldnt be able to come close to PS' sales.... oh wait, we can already see that this gen. Hence the momentum was there and making people pay for the more expensive console.

every time i see the weekly chartz i see the PS3 outselling the 360 by almost double and sometimes double (with the exception of the holidays of course) and then some shipped numbers appear (which still doesnt mean sold through customers), and now people are debating which console actually came out second....

i hope Sony and MS announce the actual sold through numbers in the upcoming years se we can finally be over with this.

ps4 sold in was at 4.5m end of december 2013
ps4 sold through was at 4.2m as of 28th december 2013

Well, if PS4 had around 1'5 mill on shelves, that probably means XBO could be around 1'5-2 mill on shelves too. This means XBO probably shipped more than 12 mill, so around 12'5-13 for the year (around 11m sold). So probably from the 6'6 mill XB shipped last quarter XBO could probably be around 5-5'5 mill, leaving X360 around 1'5-1 mill shipped. This would mean that XBO was very close to PS4 in shipments numbers (6'4m vs 5-5'5m) and PS3 and X360 were probably tied.

We don't know the real numbers for XBO or X360 but this show we can't still say as FACTS how much X360 shipped.

If you ask me, PS3 probably shipped more than X360 for the whole year and barely was outshipped in the last quarter, so it could be very reasonable to think that if PS3 surpassed X360 months ago, even with last quarter numbers, that would mean PS3 is still over X360.

So to prove my point, we still don't have facts and everybody can still make assumptions of the numbers....

Incorrect. The PS4 started FY 2014 with NO units on shelves; yet, they still ended up with 1.5m on shelves.

The Xbone already started off FY 2014 with 1m units on shelves. You also have to consider the fact that MS overshipped like crazy last FY, so they probably have 3m units on shelves.

this is so counter to any logic that I can use or imagine that I feel I have to disregard it and file it under "what the!?"

So please explain where my 2.5m overshipped figure counters any logic.

Anything under 2.5m sitting on shelves means that MS replenished stock FASTER than SONY did, which is counter to what the insiders are saying, that MS overshipped like crazy. SONY stocks deplete within 3 weeks, while MS stocks deplete within 3-4 months.
