1.) The 360 had a 10mio units headstart when the PS3 finally launched. So, having equalized those 10mio units within a shorter period of time alone is a quite honorable success for the PS3.

2.) The 360 has definitely been shipped more than the PS3.

3.) The PS3 has a bigger installed hardware base worldwide. This it what counts in the end.

1. One could just as easily argue that Playstation's momentum off of PS2 and brand power in general, more than made up for the year long headstart. No one thought the PS3 wouldn't outsell the 360 at the time. It was just a matter of when it would pass it on its way to another 100+ million selling Sony console.

2. Well the theory in this thread is that the 360 has sold more than the PS3. I can't think of a way for it to be possible for the 360 to sell more than the PS3 but not ship more, unless stores are just ordering millions of PS3's to clog their shelves.

3. Based on what?

Also LOL @ whoever said PS4 began the 2014 year with 0 units on shelves and it was impossible to find one. Uh... no.

Youre right, but no-one 'at that time' expected it was going to be $599 and release a year after the 360.

It did keep its momentum despite that and was able to beat the 360 overall, and on average sales per year.

I bet if MS or Nintendo released a console more expensive than Sony in the same generation they wouldnt be able to come close to PS' sales.... oh wait, we can already see that this gen. Hence the momentum was there and making people pay for the more expensive console.
