Forums - Nintendo - Will Xenoblade X "outshine" Zelda Wii U??

Joke thread? Only a select bunch of Nintendo fans care for Xenoblade.

*sigh*

Past numbers taken in a vacuum are not an accurate means of measuring present or future potential for success.

Need I remind you that prior to Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls was very niche.  Then Morrowind over doubled the audience, and then Oblivion doubled that, and the rest is history.

Or remind you that platformers were once the dominant genre in gaming.

Or remind you that at one time JRPGs seemed poised to become the biggest thing since sliced bread.

Or remind you that Xenoblade Chronicles X is an exclusive game for the least sold console in the market getting released later in the west? No one will care about it, except some Nintendo fans and a few reviewers. And that's it, just another great game with potential to hit 90 on Metacritic. While that's something amazing, there are tons of games to will do the same thing this year.

It takes more than a 90 meta game from an obscure franchise to outshine one of the most praised franchises in the whole industry. Only way this could happen is if Zelda U ends up being a trash.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I think many have taken 'outshine' to mean different things but if you meant simply to be of greater quality then that's certainly possibly.

Xenoblade had stellar reviews, the developer claimed it was only a practice run. If we are to believe this then I think it had a fair chance of being one of the highest rated games of the generation. If this comes to fruition then Zelda will need to be at the top of its game to surpass Xenoblade X, Eiji Aonuma has even said as much.

One things for sure, gamers are going to win.

Disagree with this in general, but especially that.  But I am not going to even try to argue this since you are clearly entrenched.

Nope, and the two games aren't even in the same genre for that to happen.

How much have they shown of Zelda? Now compare that to all they've shown about X. I rest my case.

Well, they have shown that 4 minute gameplay video of Aonuma wandering around aimlessly, which clearly shows the game is going to suck because it was horrendously downgraded since E3 and even then still had framerate issues, and that's not even talking about the ridiculously empty overworld, lack of music and especially the horrible kiddy artstyle they went with.

sarcasm?

Not sure. It comes down to that magical word: marketing. Xenoblade as a franchise has a chance to really climb fast. However, it needs to keep being pushed. So far, Nintendo's actions have been encouraging; lots of coverage in general. But the real test will be E3 and launch.

However, it doesn't have the pedigree of Zelda to back it up. Xenoblade was a great game but it's just one game; the Zelda franchise in terms of main home console entries has a ton of accolades to its name. So I don't think it will outshine it.

In the future, perhaps with Xenoblade 3, I think the two could go toe to toe if the franchise is handled right. But as it stands, I think Xenoblade is too young.

Are you talking about outshining it in sales, or quality?

Reputation.  In quality, it could match it right now; nothing prevents that.  But in order for it to gain traction in terms of reputation, it needs some time to grow up and advertising campaigns to sell it to the general gaming public.  As for if it will match it in sales, Zelda isn't a super consistent seller anyway.  Xenoblade could be a multimillion selling franchise; nothing prevents that.  It has the earmarks of a big RPG with many elements in it that are currently considered mainstream.  Scifi setting, alien worlds, open world exploration, etc.  As for if it will ever reach the Zelda heights of OoT and TP, that's up to the insall base of the future Nintendo platforms; 7mil is a lot on a slow-selling machine.

Looking forward to both but I've been playing Zelda since the first gold cartridge hit the shelves of KB Toys and I've been a fan ever since. I don't think I would be capable of an unbiased comparison where a Zelda title is concerned ... we'll just have to wait and see.

I think due to being different genres Zelda will still shine brighter in critics eyes.

JRPGs are a very niche genre and as such reviewers pay it less mind.

(Friggin look at IGN!!! They did another JRPG article with no mention of XenoX AT ALL!!)

In terms of game depth and what there was to do in the world, the original Xenoblade already demolishes every Zelda game. I do think it is a definite possibility. Zelda is going to have to step it up a large amount to be better than Xenoblade.
