On one hand I'm sad to see what used to be my favorite gaming company sinking deeper and deeper into nothingness, but on the other hand I hope this will mean an acquisition by Sony if not of the entire company, at least of the good old SEGA ips and give them a new life.

I stopped playing Shining Force I to write this... back to battle now :)

With what money???

Well it's been nearly this way for a while, guess it's only going to get worse. It's sad to see what was once a great and powerful company in the gaming business reduced to this, they barely put out any games any more (especially in the west). Sega published a lot of great titles in the 7th gen that may not have been huge hits but they had a dedicated fanbase, we will not be seeing that this gen. Sega is basically dead to me, reduced to nothing more than PC&mobile games and maybe Sonic.

RIP

This, sony should buy sega

........You REALLY think that is a good idea? I think Sony has enough on its plate as it is.

sony really doesnt have any need to buy sega anyway. there isnt anything that sega offers them that they could really leverage.

No more Sanic on Wii U? NO!!!!!!

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

If Nintendo has Nintendoom, does Sega have Segapocalypse, Segabysm, Segacabó...?

On topic: SEGA... Many great memories with their games. Monkey Ball on Gamecube was amazing, Sonic Riders was pretty darn fun and evolved into All Stars Racing, which has Mario Kart grabbed by the balls and won't let go (Sumo has done a fine ass job), Virtua Fighter, F-Zero GX! Phantasy Star, etc.

It's a shame to see them follow that path, because they might make more profit... But probably a higher number of bad games as well. I take it there won't be Mario and Sonic at Rio this year?

I wish them the best of lucks.

Really sad news.Sounds like they're moving into way smaller projects,so we could consider 'em preatty much dead at this point...

And no, neither Sony nor microsoft should buy them.Sony kind of is the one that killed them when they entered the console market, and MS...Well let's just say I don't want another Rare.Nintendo and Sega should partner, just for old times sake.

Sega has always made bad decisions for years, especially when it comes to trusting IP's with others like gearbox or BRB, releasing your games one multiple platforms and then suddenly making them exclusive to one (persona for example).

Hopefully by focusing just on PC and mobile they can churn out a few mobile games to make money on the side while focusing on more quality titles for PC and port other titles to it since it worked well for VC, PC is quite the big market, you screw up SEGA it's practically all over for you,

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

With what money???

that is the wrong question, the right question is... 'how much woud it cost?'

actually an even better question is 'how profitable would it be?'

a few different options are on the table:

A- SEGA decides to go the mobile route exclusively and maybe only publish other companie's ips

In this case I would argue they are sitting on assets for which they would have very little use for. They could very well sell the rights to their old ips that they haven't used for a long time nor have the capacity to use again (Shenmue f/e).  Depending on their plans on mobile I would say they should also think about selling off phantasy star, shining force, story of thor (going oldschool xD), Streets of Rage (c'mon!) etc.

On Sony's side, with consoles needing a boost on the JP market, guaranteeing the rights to such cult Japan made classics should make a big impact on the sales of vitas and ps4's in Japan mostly.

I haven't even mentioned Atlus which has almost single handedly been feeding the western market on JRPG's for the past several years.

B- SEGA decides to sell out completely:

That would be a lot more complicated, with Sony in the middle of a global restructure, after selling off the Vaio division, downsizing in the TV business, it seems like they have put their eggs in the Playstation ecosystem. I would imagine that with the focus on the playstation as a service (playstation now, playstation vue, playstation video and music, playstation plus...) they need to shift their investment to content and not as much on the hardware side of things. Would it be profitable acquiring such a rich backlog of content as the one SEGA sits on? Maybe, again, it depends on the cost. If the point was to simply re-release the same games in digital form to buy or rent, probably not. But having the teams in active development feeding new content could be very very valuable.

Will any of this happen... unfortunately I don't think so. One can hope though.
