| Soundwave said: I think you kinda have to look at device sales though when look at it in context versus traditional handhelds. A person who is content playing free games on iOS may not contribute to mobile gaming revenue, but they are getting their mobile downtime eaten up by their phone, as such that person is unlikely to purchase a traditional handheld. That's a big problem for traditional handhelds. A lot of people today feel like 'why should I buy one of these, I have 10-15 minutes of free gaming time when I'm away from the house, and I can play smartphone games during that time'. That's really what's hurting traditional handhelds, people are deciding they don't need one at all. |
It's a role phones just perform better. But when it comes to AAA handheld gaming, when you sit down longer or are commutor who's travelling long stretches, handhelds are just better.

I really can't see how they can sustain Wii U gamewise and financially.
Nintendo hasn't been able to deliver a consistent release schedule and this year doesn't seem to really improve on that.
If they can't do that in the best years of the consoles, how can they do that towards the end when Nintendo will be heavily invested in games for the next handheld - which is going to need even more manpower.
What new games or old games are there to support the fall in HW sales in 2016 and 2017? The library will be so small and will lack so much diversity that sales will probably fall faster than in older generations. And they starting point to fall is so low that will be hard to keep at retailers. Remember when Wii U started selling bad and all those retailers started cutting the price and giving it shelf space? At the best, the same thing will happen again.
Wii U's business is so small that software royalties earned couldn't even cover the losses on the system for 1 1/2 years.
That's really what's coming for Wii U in 2016:
no system sellers like MK and Smash (one per generation), Mario (confirmed that the new one is being developed for next gen), Zelda (the new one will arrive in the 3rd full year in the market);
Even less games because Nintendo will be focusing on the next handheld and home console (look at the end of GC and Wii's lifecycles and you'll see how little support they had);
Even less revenue being made by falling sales;
Retailers will give it even less support because there just won't be enough new games or system sellers.
Can we really expect Nintendo to just release a new console during Christmas in 2017?

The market for that is fairly small.
Even in airports, I travel a lot for work, I see virtually no dedicated handhelds anywhere, even with kids it's all tablets/phones they're playing games on.
The truth is I think no one really 'needs' to play a hardcore game on the road. If they want to play a really deep game, that's what the home console and 50 inch screen is for.
Portable gaming is just something to eat up a few portions of downtime, but I will say though people seem to get addicted to smart device games too, I know a couple of girls hooked on Candy Crush, even on an airplane, they'd rather play Candy Crush than Mario 3D Land or something.
In the past you had to buy a dedicated handheld if you wanted to play on the road at all, but that isn't obviously the case anymore.
So that's the issue with the wiiu, the guy at the top is to blind and arrogant to see what the issue is and do something about it. Their own titles wont do the trick, they need 3rd party games.
