Forums - Gaming - Sony in talks with MS about Blu-Ray for 360...

What I meant was the drive doesn't just rev up to XXXX RPM and stay there the entire time a disc is in, and as explained BD drives have the capability to spin at variable speeds, speeds for CD's, DVD's and Blu-ray discs, would you get your head out of your ass and actually think about what you are posting?

The question is not "can a BR player play DVDs", but "can the PS3 BR player read DVDs at 12X".

To read a movie DVD or a music CD, you just need a 1x player. Same with BR. The PS3 has a 2x BR player, so it's not necessarily able to read DVDs at 12X.

That means it can read BR discs at 2x...that doesn't say anything about the rate at which it can read DVDs or CDs. So we need the drive specs to know the rate it can read the DVDs and CDs.

You know what, I'm getting sick of your incompetence gebx. Here's a few things you need to know.
1. Blu-ray will become the standard, reasons stated in a previous post.
2. All Blu-ray drives can play DVD's with no problem at all.
3. No game will ever be released on Blu-ray for the 360 even if they did get a BD add-on.
4. Before getting into a debate next time, actually know what your talking about rather than making random guesses or quoting other people.

Any other questions? I'd be happy to answer, in the meantime take your stupidity elsewhere.

Why do I sound like a broken record??

I'll repeat what I've said - You can't know for sure that Blu Ray will become the standard, its too early, its still has too much competition from DVD's, upconverting DVD players and digital distribution.

You mention that BluRay players can run x12 disk, but you havn't proved that in any way, and I can't find any proof to prove or disapprove that its currently possible.

Thank you for re-repeating what we both agree on.. No games will be released on Bluray for the 360.. I really don't understand why you're trying to prove that again.

Yeah you're right, if I have any questions on how future technologies will turn out and where I should invest my money, I'll go straight to you!

Because YOU know how markets work!! <-- that still makes me laugh, I'm sure you're a millionaire who's made hundreds of money back guaranteed investments...

And I like how you ignored the other users messages.. like the one where BR accounts for 2% of the market...  Those numbers are mind blowing!

You mean to say I sound like a broken record. I have given several reason why Blu-ray will become the standard. It was chosen by the studios for the next HD format, Ps3 is pushing it forward, it's storage uses are endless, player prices are dropping, HD downloads are very impractical, need I go on?

And if you looked at the other link it shows BD Players can do 12x (If you can't find it yourself you aren't looking very hard). That being said, does it really even matter? Like I said if the 360 were to get a BD add-on it would not be used to play games, so why does it matter? It doesn't. You don't seem to understand WHY 360 games won't release on Blu-ray though....

And yes I know how the market works, I know what direction media is going, it all points to High-Definition, and Blu-ray is the chosen HD format. It will become the standard, just watch.

Blu-ray accounts for 2% of the market, yes, because DVD has had a long time to itself, but that number will be increasing, and obviously the studios think so too, or they wouldn't be spending money on making it so.

Here's another link showing you that BD players can do 12X DVD, stand alone players however do not need to go that high since DVD movies don't require it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106225 Look at it's specs.

Also as I've said before, you know nothing about Blu-ray and really shouldn't be arguing about it due to your lack of knowledge. I have found you to be one of the most foolish users here.

Any other questions I can answer for your under-developed mind?

Ah, if I would of found that I probably wouldn't of asked you to prove it to me...

* Insert Picard smaking head pic here

The Xbox 360 drive is x 12, the speed slows the further away from the middle the data is located. Programmers know this and will place data that needs to be accessed faster near the middle, and less important data that doesn't need quick access farthest from the middle.

Blu Ray drive reads at a constant speed, while it is faster then the 360 drive at the edge, its slower then the 360 near the middle.

Where's MikeB?? at least he knows his shit...

DVDs and HD-DVDs spin at a constant speed, but read at a variable bit-rate because the number of bits that can be read per second is less toward the spindle.  Blu-ray reads at a constant bit-rate, so their drive has to be variable speed to adjust.

The fact that Blu-ray drives spin at variable speeds worries me regarding the lifespan of the stepper motors... it's harder on them to change speed than to rotate at a constant speed (changing momentum due to accelleration/deceleration in proportion to the mass of the disc, etc.).

The old laser-disc players (I have one and about 90 movies) could play both CAV and CLV movies which had dramatically different characteristics regarding spin-rate, bit-rate, etc.  But the motors in those players were fairly beefy (had to be to handle those big discs).
