The question is not "can a BR player play DVDs", but "can the PS3 BR player read DVDs at 12X".

To read a movie DVD or a music CD, you just need a 1x player. Same with BR. The PS3 has a 2x BR player, so it's not necessarily able to read DVDs at 12X.

 That means it can read BR discs at 2x...that doesn't say anything about the rate at which it can read DVDs or CDs. So we need the drive specs to know the rate it can read the DVDs and CDs.
