Can you buy the Amiibo DLC separately?

No -_-

DLC isn't a bad thing if it's implemented well. Some companies, like Nintendo, do it well. Amiibos are a smart way to do DLC because you get content in a wide variety of games plus a figure. MK8's DLC is an incredible value. HW's is a bit expensive, but you get a lot of stuff with it, so I won't complain.

Seems kind of lame, then.  If you want the DLC, you have to buy a toy.  If you only want the DLC, that makes it pretty damn expensive.  Personally, I have zero interest in "collectibles".  If I'm going to buy a figurine for display purposes, it's not going to be low-end.  Of the Amiibo I've seen, the only one I'd drop $5 on would be Captain Toad.

I don't have a problem with Amiibo existing but, let's be honest, it's a way to get money.  Cheap, easy to create DLC bundled to cheap, high-profit globs of plastic.  Nothing to protest but nothing that should be celebrated, either.

I still think they're missing the Skylander/Infinity boat with kids, however, without something fun to tie the figurines together.

I agree with this whole post

It's DLC, and it may not be as bad as some, but it's also no better than most. Content that is already available on the disc (in the case of new releases) or added in through a patch (for games that were released before amiibo) that is locked away and can only be unlocked if you buy this or that figurine. Even the data storage functionality could easily have been done with a wii remote (remember? those things have memory too).

The Mario kart 8 dlc price to content ratio is just insane (in a good way), and then you've got turtle rock studios (evolve) valuing one playable character at $15.

This is the sort of thing that I personally want to see from Nintendo DLC. It's new(kind of), and innovative, which is what Nintendo is known for. If they continue to price their DLC so aggresively and their games going forward, they do have the potential to reshape how the gaming industry views and treats DLC as well as games in general. Iwata and Miyamoto have both been quoted saying that they wonder if putting less money into the cinnematics of the game really effects the end result. Granted in Mario or Captain Toad or most Nintendo titles in general, this would be a great decision. But maybe, just maybe, this concept could be applied to other games from other companies as well.

I mostly just worry that Nintendo will wake up one day and decide to follow the already established model, or that one day we're going to see a situation in which we're forced to buy Amiibo. Something I personally don't agree with.

DLC = downloadable content

Amiibo are physical figures so no they are not DLC. If anything they should just be classified as NFC figures like Skylanders and Disney infinity.

And I like them and think they're worth it.

Mostly just using the term DLC to mean addon content for a cost, which is what DLC is. Semantics are silly.

So let's change the term to PLC. Physical Load Content.

PLC is taken: Public Limited Corporation
